FA Cup 1st Q.R.Replay - GNE 2 Northwich V. 2 (GNE win on pens)

Tue 16th September 2014 | FA Challenge Cup
By Jonathan Haggart

At half time it never looked on. Glossop were trailing and were definitely second best, having struggled to make an impression on the muscular Northwich defence.

They had started brightly enough, Kelvin Lugsden forcing a save at the near post when flicking on a corner, and Luke Mack making Deasy work again with a dipping low shot. But from the 17th minute to the break, they barely made an impression.

The turning point in the half was a Stuart Cooke goal. He picked the ball up at the edge of the area and drove a low shot goalwards. It took a little deflection on the way that just took the ball away from Greg Hall’s dive as it arrowed into the corner.

On 45 minutes Godwin Abadaki advanced into the area and launched a high shot into the net, and the game already looked lost. North End were two down and not playing well.

However, after the break it all turned on its head. Chris Willcock’s words had clearly had some effect, as the team were so much livelier from the whistle. Indeed, Kieran Lugsden thought he had pulled one back on 50 minutes only to find himself on the wrong side of a very tight offside call.

However, in the 54th minute they did pull one back. A Lee Blackshaw curling free kick on the left edge of the area took a little nick off a defender on the way to goal, but he will definitely claim the strike.

Within three minutes the scores were level. Eddie Moran launched a deep deep cross to the far post that seemed to catch out the Northwich keeper, and Jason Carey was waiting to score past the ailing Deasy.

With the scores level each side gave as good as they got in midfield, and chances became scarce. Tireless running from the North End front pair was keeping Northwich honest at the back, but it was Northwich that created two good chances, Gary Burnett chipping wide over the onrushing Hall and in injury time forcing Hall into a low save. It was to be extra time.

The first period was reasonably quiet, although The Hillmen thought that they should have had a penalty when Carey had his legs swept from underneath him, but the referee thought otherwise.

In the second period Northwich held the upper hand. Scott Harries dipped a shot wide and Burnett again created a chance for himself, turning Dave Young and advancing on goal on a tight angle, but Hall was able to save at his feet. There was a succession of Northwich corners, with one scramble ending in a wild shot over the bar. That meant penalties.

The Hillmen were on the front foot straight away, when a tired looking Cooke saw his penalty saved by Hall. Young, Bailey & Moran scored for GNE, with Harris and Clarke doing the same for Vic to make it 3-2.

But when Burnett hit the post with Vics’ fourth penalty, Lee Blackshaw could win it for the Hillmen, and made no mistake. A healthy crowd of 250 cheered the players from centre spot to clubhouse!

The Hillmen will now travel to Chorley in the next round, in a tie to be played on 27 September.
