Players from Runcorn Town were invited by club sponsors Arriva North West to launch the arrival of its first fleet of gas buses in Runcorn.

The introduction of ten MAN EcoCity gas engine buses to Runcorn follows a successful trial of the technology in Merseyside during 2012 and a £2million investment as a result of a bid to the government’s Green Bus Fund. The gas buses, powered by landfill-produced gas, went into service in Runcorn on the 1st of March.

The gas-engined vehicles are part of a £15.5million overall investment in new, environmentally friendly buses in the North West, supported by the Green Bus Fund. This includes 44 hybrid double deck buses across the region in addition to the single deck buses in Runcorn

With Arriva being one of Runcorn Town's main sponsors, defender Danny Dalton and striker James McShane were invited along on behalf of the club to help celebrate the launch. They were shown the new buses and given a tour of the depot, as well as being asked many questions about the continued progress being made at the football club.

Much to their delight, Danny and James were then given the keys to the new buses and allowed to do a lap of the depot.

John Rimmer, area managing director of Arriva North West, was delighted with the launch saying: “As one of the largest bus companies in the North West, we are committed to leading the way when it comes to using technology to deliver solid benefits to our customers and the environment.

“The buses have been specially designed for the UK market and, as they run on bio-gas, provide a carbon neutral solution to the environmental challenges we face as a transport provider in the 21st century.

"This is a fantastic investment for Runcorn and these improvements are another step towards making bus travel as environmentally friendly as possible. The future will see further investment to reinforce our commitment to greener travel".

Glyn Davies, Commercial Manager at Runcorn Town FC said: "It was great to be part of such an important event at Arriva with the launch of their new gas buses. We would like to thank Arriva for inviting us along to the launch, and wish them every success with this new venture”.
