On the day that the Macron Cup Final should have took place at Altrincham's Moss Lane, Charnock Richard lifted the inaugural Twitter Cup Final after a hard-fought win over West Didsbury & Chorlton.

The Final attracted over 10,000 votes, giving us a total just shy of 110,000 who voted in total. Both sides were leading at various stages of the final, with Charnock receiving a helping hand from Wigan Athletic who urged their supporters to get behind the men in green.

It was still all to play for in the last hour of the poll, but Charnock held on to record a 52-48 victory. Congratulations to them and our thanks to everyone who took part.

The road to the Final was a difficult one for both sides, with Charnock and West battling their way past 58 other NWCFL teams in a bid to take home the trophy.

Charnock progressed past Alsager Town and Barnoldswick Town before a winner takes all encounter with Holker Old Boys. Supporters of National League sides Barrow and Chorley got behind their respective neighbours with Charnock progressing to the knockout stages.

There they overcame Cammell Laird 1907 62-38 before a 64-36 win over Maine Road in the Quarter Finals. The Semi Final was much closer for them, beating Wythenshawe Amateurs 54-46.

West Didsbury & Chorlton's group saw them beat Irlam before a narrow victory over Lower Breck. It was that narrow that scores were level at 50-50 with three minutes of the poll remaining. They then comfortably saw off Runcorn Town to reach the knockout stages.

In the knockout stages they have overcome fierce opposition. First they faced Stockport Town with Robbie Savage, Rio Ferdinand and Andy Cole all calling for support for Stockport. The game finished 50-50, largely due to us not knowing how draws work in Twitter polls! An extra time poll saw them through 52-48 despite more vote chasing from the ex-pro's.

In the Quarter Final they faced Prestwch Heys and it was the darts world who tried to stop them this time. Glen Durrant, Kevin Painter, Wayne Mardle, Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld all threw their support behind Heys but West came through 51-49. And in the Semi Final's they faced Daisy Hill and all was going well until Bolton Wanderers threw their support behind Daisy Hill, with West also winning that 51-49.

The Twitter Cup has certainly captured the imagination with a total of 98,836 votes cast so far. West should start as favourites as they have accurred more votes in the competition than their opponents, although it is close if we remove the extra time game against Stockport. It does remain to be seen who will throw their support behind Charnock though to try and stop them, as everybody has tried and failed so far.

Vote for who you want to win by heading over to our Twitter from 3.00pm.
