Sunday Football At Rochdale Town

For the second time this season, there's a chance to sample Sunday football in the NWCFL this coming weekend, when Rochdale Town host Cheadle Town at the Mayfield Sports Centre.

Although clubs have played many a cup tie in the FA Cup and FA Vase on a Sunday over the years, Sunday league games have been something of a rarity, and it was generally reckoned that when Maine Road hosted West Didsbury & Chorlton on Sunday 27th December last year, it was the first time a NWCFL game had been played on the Sabbath.

Now, we have a second Sunday game of the season this weekend, this time in Division One, and as Rochdale Town Chairman Mark Canning explained, it came about due to their landlords Rochdale Mayfield Rugby League club having a National Conference League Premier Division home game scheduled for Saturday afternoon against Lock Lane.

"When we realised that we couldn't play on Saturday, it was first mentioned that we should move the game to Friday evening", said Mark.

"But I spoke to Terry Hincks at Cheadle Town to see if he was happy to play on Sunday, and when he said he was, we cleared it with the League and got everything arranged.

"I am hoping that moving the game to Sunday will attract a bigger attendance than it would have done on a Saturday, and we have decided on a 4 pm kick off, which will hopefully suit more people.

"With Cheadle going for promotion, it's an important game for them so there is plenty to play for, and I would urge anyone who fancies watching a game on a Sunday afternoon to come down".
