The Reusch Champions Cup final will see Premier Division champions City of Liverpool host Macron Cup winners 1874 Northwich on Saturday 27th July.

In fact, these two sides actually met in the Macron Cup final when 1874 beat COL 1-0 thanks to an 88th minute Aaron Smith goal.

That victory went down as one of the biggest days in the club's history alongside their Supporters Direct Shield win in 2013-14 and back-to-back Mid-Cheshire Senior Cup victories in 2015-16 and 16-17.

1874 did fail to beat their opponents on Saturday in league action last season, however, drawing 1-1 and losing 6-3 in their two clashes.

This game will be the last NWCFL commitment for reigning Premier Division champions City of Liverpool as they face a fresh challenge at step four following promotion.

They entered the league in 2016-17 and enjoyed a fruitful period as members of the league, lifting the First Division Challenge Cup, Macron Cup and won the First Division Play-off in 2016-17.

COL also have previous in the Champions Cup having lifted the trophy in 2017-18 after defeating Atherton Colleries on penalties.

This was despite them being down to nine men and requiring a 90th minute equaliser to force a shootout.

Looking ahead to the game, City of Liverpool chairman Paul Manning said, "The Champions Cup game against 1874 Northwich on Saturday is the culmination of what was a truly great and historic season for the club, which saw us lift the Premier Division trophy on a highly dramatic last day of the Season at Irlam.

"We take the Reusch Champions Cup seriously because the winners roll is printed in the NWCFL Handbook each year and we like seeing our name in that as often as possible!

"Of course, the game forms part of pre-season preparations, and with our season not starting until 10th August (originally 17th), I would guess that we are a bit behind 1874 in our fitness levels. Nevertheless, Robbo [Craig Robinson, manager] and our lads will want to give it a good go and try and win it."

Reflecting on the defeat, Manning takes a positive spin on the defeat, claiming, "1874 Northwich deserved to beat us in the Macron Cup final in May and spoilt our hopes of “the double” but in all honesty, it did not take the shine off our League title win.

The 2019 Reusch Champions Cup final will be held at the Berry Street Garage stadium in Bootle on Saturday 27th July. Kick off is 3pm.
