Although eight games in the final fixture card before Christmas fell foul of the weather, the 21 games that did take place gave spectators the opportunity to dodge last minute shopping and take in some football action.

The Premier Division league leaders going into Christmas will be City of Liverpool, and although the form guide suggested that a trip to bottom of the table Abbey Hey wouldbe routine for the Purps, it transpired that just a single goal separated the teams at the end.

An own goal on the hour was enough to give the Purps a 1-0 win, and maintain their six point advantage at the top over Congleton Town, who kept up the pressure on the table toppers with a 3-2 win at Whitchurch Alport.

It was, however, a game that delivered the most dramatic win of the day, as Town were 2-1 down with two minutes remaining when Saul Henderson equalised, and then in the seventh minute of stoppage time Bevan Burey completed a sensational turnaround with the winner for the Bears.

Bootle moved up in to third place, ahead of Runcorn Town on goal difference, with a good 3-0 win at home to the resurgent West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Daniel Murphy, Connor Millington and Johnny Foy were on target for the Bucks.

Two of the form sides in the division, Winsford United and Burscough, met at the St Lukes Barton Stadium, and although both teams came into the game on the back of winning runs, it was honours even at the end with Samuel Howell’s goal for Winsford United 17 minutes from time securing the home side a 2-2 draw.

Another team on form are Northwich Victoria, who recorded their eighth win in ten games with a 2-0 success at home to Charnock Richard.

Goals in the last 18 minutes from Robert Doran and Jordan Darr ensured that Vics moved up into sixth place, and are now just five points behind Bootle in third place with two games in hand, albeit they are level on points with both Barnoldswick Town and Squires Gate.

Gate continued their winning run, with a 2-0 victory at Irlam their fifth in a row, and both goals came in the opening 10 minutes, through Dean Ing and Jordan Salthouse.

Elsewhere, Lennon Whewell struck the winner 20 minutes from time in Litherland REMYCA’s 2-1 home win over 1874 Northwich, and an own goal earned Ashton Athletic a 1-0 win over Silsden at Brocstedes Park.

In the First Division North, five games took place, and the eye catching result of the day was at the Brian Boys West View Stadium, where Bacup Borough won 3-2 against second in the table Carlisle City.

After an entertaining first half ended 2-2 at the break, Kyle Brooks won the game for Borough with a goal in the 86th minute.

Third placed Avro took advantage of that result to close the gap on Carlisle City to just three points, with a 2-0 win over AFC Liverpool at the Vestacare Stadium, Joe Bevan scoring both goals inside the opening 27 minutes.

Hopefully, no one who attended the game between Cleator Moor Celtic and Shelley left early, as anyone who did missed an action packed last few minutes.

Celtic were 3-1 up with four minutes left, but then Mathew Waller, Craig Billington and Gary Driscoll scored three times in three minutes to put the visitors 4-3 up.

However, the drama wasn’t over as Calum Birdsall levelled for Celtic in stoppage time to salvage a point from a 4-4 draw.

There were also eight goals at Andrew Street, with Jack Turnbull notching a hat trick in Chadderton’s 6-2 win over Atherton LR, which moved them into 13th place, one place behind AFC Blackpool who won 4-0 at home to Ashton Town.

The game of musical chairs at the top of the First Division South continued, and there is now just eight points separating the top nine clubs.

The table is headed now by Wythenshawe Amateurs, who won 4-0 at Stone Dominoes, Alan Dolan scoring a goal in each half.

That result meant Rylands were knocked off the top after being held to a goalless draw at Cheadle Town.

Abbey Hulton United are third after having to settle for a 1-1 draw at bottom of the table Ellesmere Rangers. It looked good for Abbey when Dylan Bath put them ahead with five minutes left, but Nathan Day struck an 88th minute equaliser for Rangers.

Wythenshawe Town shared a 2-2 draw at home to Stone Old Alleynians, a result that means the clubs occupy fourth and fifth place respectively. Brad Byrne rescued a point for Town with an equaliser 16 minutes from the end.

Two goals from Richard Tindall and one from Leon Grandison gave Cheadle Heath Nomads a 3-0 half time lead at Maine Road that they kept to the end, and they now sit in sixth place a point ahead of St Martins who lost 2-0 at home to Stockport Town.

A 90th minute winner from Jordan Davies gave Sandbach United a 1-0 win over Vauxhall Motors, that moved United into seventh place ahead of the Motormen on goal difference, and Alsager Town shared a 1-1 draw with Eccleshall at Wood Park.
