Division One Preview - 13th and 14th April 2018

Looking at this weekend’s Division One games, like with the Premier Division there is a good set of fixtures as a number of the sides looking for Automatic promotion and the play offs face off. As the games start to run out for some, hopes and dreams for many will start to fade but for some renewed hope and optimism looms.
Starting off on Friday as Nelson host league leaders, Silsden at Little Wembley. For Nelson their season has been a tough one with many challenges and they will look to surprise a few as they head into their last few games. I don’t think this one has coupon buster on it though as Silsden have been solid all season, although they have recently come up against a strong battle with Litherland Remyca for the top spot, one that looks like it will go to the final weekend of the season at the current rate.
On Saturday, St Helens Town host Litherland Remyca at the Acroframe Stadium with Town looking to rack up the few points they will need to guarantee staying clear of the bottom two come the end of the season whilst The Remy look to keep the pressure on Silsden for the title. Form Table-wise, as you would expect from a side challenging at the top, Remyca are right up there but St Helens Town have managed to get a couple of good results under their belt of late so although the visitors will arrive as favorites, you wouldn’t write off St Helens’ chances.
Prestwich Heys host Stockport Town at Adie Moran Park this weekend looking to in-turn keep the pressure on Litherland and Silsden. Heys’ have a number of games in hand on those clubs and indeed fellow automatic promotion chasers, Whitchurch Alport and will be keen to get them played as the weather keeps mithering the schedule somewhat, despite this they are in strong form. Stockport will be looking to convert their good cup form into league presence as they make the relatively short journey but will be mindful of the fact that they have not travelled too well of late.
Two of the play-off candidates go head to head at the Mechanics Stadium this weekend as AFC Blackpool host Sandbach Town. Sandbach are relatively safe in the buxom of the play off places but Blackpool have drifted just a couple of places below the line. A win for The Mechanics would certainly stir the mix up a bit in a group of clubs where nothing is certain at the moment and even the play-off places could go down to the last couple of games.
A club looking to swerve the play-offs and go up automatically is Whitchurch Alport and they face a tricky away trip this weekend as they travel to New Mills in search of points. It has been a mixed week for Alport, good wins at Atherton LR and at home to AFC Blackpool on the field we tainted by the concerning news that their Media Man and regular writer of this column, Martin Wild has had a fall and is ill in hospital at the moment. Many have wished him best wishes via the club but of course we all wish him a swift and safe recovery. For New Mills they currently find themselves twelfth and in the middle of a tough block of fixtures with Sandbach and Cammell Laird to be faced in succession after this game.
Atherton LR host Alsager Town at Crilly Park with the visitors just about holding on to that all important sixth place at the moment, with a number of clubs looking to relieve them of that. One of which are Holker OB who travel to The Venue to face FC FC Oswestry Town this weekend. Holker have only one defeat in their last six and are currently sitting in the top six of the form table and go into their game at Oswestry off the back of last weekends impressive 4-3 home win over Whitchurch Alport.
Another side looking to challenge Alsager for that sixth spot are Cammell Laird 1907 who travel to Chadderton to face them at the ARK Fleetech Stadium. Lairds are currently seventh in the table but in the top four of the form charts, they also have a good record on the road. Interestingly enough these clubs have only faced each other twice, despite long histories I this are of the pyramid and that was back in the 2014/15 season when Lairds won their home game 5-0 but Chadderton returned the favor at Andrew Street winning 1-0 in that one.
Carlisle City and Abbey Hulton are in mid-table at present and in similar positions in the form charts, they go head to head this weekend at Gillford Park. Carlisle have taken four points in their last two games with a win at home to Eccleshall and a good looking point on the road at Cheadle whilst Abbey Hulton have been hit and miss in their last four games.
Daisy Hill host Cheadle Town at New Sirs with Daisy Hill propping up the table at the moment, this despite having played some reasonable football at times, food for thought for next season though for one of the leagues long standing and respected names. Cheadle are much improved of late and only one defeat in their last four will see them go into this game as favorites. Eccleshall and Bacup Borough both find themselves in the bottom five at present but both have proved in their day that they can beat anyone, they meet this weekend at Pershall Park and could do with some points. Bacup will have a busy run-in with having a number of games still to play, many of which are at home but you suspect they are in a false position.
