Fri 3rd November 2017 | General | By Connor O`Neill
It was Sir Alex Ferguson who first used the phrase “football, bloody hell!” but you can bet those involved in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division have muted something similar so far this season.
In what’s proving to be to one of the most open and competitive seasons for a long time, and with another set of intriguing fixtures ahead, you wouldn’t bet against those same words being said again around 5 pm on Saturday night.
To kick off this weekend’s preview, league leaders Runcorn Town make the trip to The Ambitek Stadium to take on Irlam. Chris Herbert’s side made it 13 wins from 14 league games on Wednesday night when Paul McManus’ last-gasp penalty sealed all three points against Hanley Town. Herbert’s men currently sit six points clear of second place Runcorn Linnets.
Irlam meanwhile ended a two game losing streak with a fine 1-0 win over Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday night. Matty Boland’s first half strike was enough for Michael Dodd's side who currently sit 14th in the table.
Second place Runcorn Linnets welcome West Didsbury & Chorlton to the Millbank.
Michael Ellison’s suffered a mixed back of results in October with his side picking up three wins, two draws and one defeat. Ellison’s side, who played for more than an hour with nine men in Tuesday’s defeat to Irlam, will no doubt be looking to avenge the 4-0 suffered to West back in August.
Meanwhile West will be looking to get back to winning ways themselves after two successive league defeats, their most recent coming on Tuesday when they were comfortably beaten at home by Bootle. Steve Settle will no doubt be looking to current top goal scorer Tom Bailey to extend his tally; the forward already has 17 to his name in all competitions.
Currently sitting in third place is Michael Edwards’ Hanley Town who welcome Burscough to Potteries Park.
Edwards’ side suffered only their second league defeat of the season on Wednesday night. The Staffordshire based will be hoping top goal scorer Daniel Cope can continue his impressive form; the front man already has an impressive 17 goals to his name so far this season.
Burscough meanwhile will arrive in Staffordshire full of confidence after collecting their first league win over the season in their last outing. Braces from Peter Henerty and Terry Cummings fired the Greens to a 4-1 win over Barnoldswick Town.
Just a point behind Hanley is Bootle, who take on Widnes at the Select Security Stadium. Joe Doran and Phil Stafford’s side have suffered just one defeat in their last six games, and come into this game on the back of a fine 4-0 win over West Didsbury & Chorlton.
Ryan Cox will be hoping to continue him impressive form - the forward, who notched a brace in Tuesday night’s win, has found the net eight times in his last six games.
Widnes will be looking to return to winning ways after a 1-0 defeat to Abbey Hey in their last outing. The current Division One champions, who have adjusted well to life under managerial duo Kevin Towey and Steve Akrigg, will be out for revenge after suffering a 5-2 defeat in the reserve fixture back in August.
Talking of Abbey Hey, they make trip to Lancashire to take on Charnock Richard at Mossie Park. Luke Gibson’s side, who currently sit in 17th, will be looking to build on their fine 1-0 win away at Widnes. Adam Farrand was the scorer for Hey on Monday night and he will no doubt be looking to add to his six goals already this season.
Charnock meanwhile, sit just three points behind Bootle in fifth but have a mere six games in hand on their Merseyside counter-parts, and come into this game on the back of a 1-0 win over Irlam last Saturday.
Elsewhere this weekend, there is a huge Merseyside derby at the TDP Solicitors Stadium as City of Liverpool take on AFC Liverpool.
Simon Burton’s side currently sit in 9th and will be looking to get back to winnings ways after a midweek defeat at home to Squires Gate. Burton’s side has, however, already beaten their local rivals when goals from Danny Dalton and Tom Peterson handed the Purps a 2-0 FA Vase win.
However, it's ten straight defeats in all competitions for Chris Stammers’ Reds. It’s been a torrid time of late for Stammers and his side, who’s latest defeat came at the hands of Northwich Victoria on Wednesday.
Newly-crowded Macron club of the month for October Ashton Athletic head to the seaside to take on Squires Gate.
Jay Foulds and Dougie Pitts’ side have been in fantastic form winning all six games played in October; while also scoring goals for fun in the process. The Yellows found the net a more than impressive 29 times in the month with forward Dale Korie-Butler notching ten of them.
Gate themselves are also in good form as they extended their unbeaten run to four games with an excellent 1-0 win at City of Liverpool. Mark Buchan’s first half penalty was enough for Andy Clarkson’s side, who also claimed all three points in their last outing at the Brian Addison Stadium against Congleton Town.
Padiham will be taking on a few familiar faces when they travel to Barnton to take on Northwich Victoria at Townfield.
Vics are currently managed by former Storks boss Steve Wilkes, whose side have won their last three league games helping to move them up to 12th. Wilkes will also be looking to forward duo Brian Matthews and Jason Hart to continue their impressive goals scoring from. Matthews has 14 for the season - while former Stork Hart has four in his last three games.
Well, what more needs to said about Padiham’s last game. A memorable stoppage-time comeback which has sent social media into overdrive and attracted the attention of millions. But Dixon Lambert and Liam Smith will now doubt be looking to get their side back to winning ways after last weekend’s draw and get some revenge for the 4-2 defeat inflicted on them by Vics back in August.
The penultimate game of this weekend’s preview sees Barnoldswick Town welcome 1874 Northwich to the Silentnight Stadium. Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison’s side is currently on a three game running streak with latest victory coming in a mid-Cheshire derby against Barnton. Goals from Jake Parker, his third in three games, Scott McGowan and Sam Hind ensured 74 ran out 3-2 winners.
Barnoldswick, on the other hand, will be looking to return to winning ways after a disappointing 4-1 defeat at Burscough with Zak Dale bagging a late consolation. Prior to that though, Danny Craig’s side had been in good form winning three and drawing one of their last four games; Craig’s side currently sit in 15th.
Finally, to conclude this weekend’s preview, Winsford United makes the trip to East Lancashire to take on AFC Darwen at the WEC Group Anchor Ground. The home side, who currently find themselves in the drop zone, will be looking to end a three game losing streak which has seen them concede no fewer than 14 goals.
While Lee Duckworth’s side arrive in East Lancashire looking to build on last Saturday's 4-3 win over AFC Liverpool. Duckworth’s side currently sit in sixth and will be hoping for a repeat performance from when these two sides last met in September, as goals from Callum Gardner and James Rothwell handed the Blues a 2-0 win.
