Maine Road's FA Vase exit at the hands of Pontefract Collieries last weekend continued the club's unenviable record of defeats in the competition.
For a club that has spent only two seasons outwith our League's top division since 1990, Road's record in the Vase is nothing short of remarkable - for all the wrong reasons.
The defeat was their fourth in succession at the first hurdle, but that only tells part of the story, as the club's long serving (and as far as the Vase is concerned, long suffering) Secretary Derek Barber explained.
"We first entered the Vase in season 1982-83, when St. Dominics visited Brantingham Road, winning 3-1.
"Since that game we have played a further 62 games, in 36 seasons, and our results have gone from bad to very bad.
"The best season was 1994-95 when we reached the Fourth Round, only to have two players sent off (Simon Savage and David Swindells) in a 2-1 defeat away at St Andrews.
"The two players dismissed made a total of 456 appearances for the club, and hardly committed any fouls, so you could imagine our thoughts about the referee.
"Nine defeats on the bounce from 1999 to 2008 was undoubtedly our worst run, and we have only won three times in the last 19 seasons.
"The total record is - Played 63 Won 20 Drew 7 Lost 36 Goals F 103 A 120
"We have had some marvellous trips, especially to the North East, and it`s a great pity that games are more localised nowadays. We have made some great friends, and some of the games have resulted in playing friendlies for the last 20 odd years with St Dominics and Christleton .
"The last two defeats have come against Bootle last season (who were top of our Premier Division at the time) and Pontefract Collieries who are at the top of the Northern Counties East League at the moment, but overall it doesn't matter who we play, we still generally lose.
"Let's hope the hoodo soon ends".
