Premier Division Preview

With the FA Cup Preliminary Round taking Centre stage this weekend it would be easy to overlook the fact that there are only a few Premier Division games taking place in the Hallmark Security League.  Overlook this fact at your peril, as last season showed, it was important to get league momentum going and to maintain it.  Even at this early stage a few clubs are starting to show early on that they mean business this season and a number of those – Yes, you guessed it, they’re playing this weekend.

So starting at the Anchor Ground where AFC Darwen host AFC Liverpool.  Darwen got off to a difficult start last Saturday where they travelled to Congleton and came away on the wrong end of a 6-2 score-line.  Not an ideal start against one of many peoples ‘dark horses’ this season.

Such is the level of expectation at Bootle this season, that a draw against West Didsbury in midweek raised eyebrows from pundits and observers alike.  They welcome Barnton to the TDP Solicitors Stadium looking for a win against a tough looking Barton side who have started ok so far.  Barton netted three past high flying Charnock Richard in their first game, although Charnock netted five but they still put in a good performance to warrant getting something from the game, they just couldn’t match the visitors scoring prowess.  In midweek Barton also netted three times, against 1874 Northwich on this occasion and they did manage to come away from that game with a point.

Joe Doran’s Bootle have, as expected hit the ground running with a solid performance at Ashton Athletic last Saturday, the evergreen Tony Rendell netting a late winner for The Bucks.  Then in midweek taking a point in a six goal thriller against West, Michael Ordish carry on on where he left off from last season, netting a brace in that match.

Charnock Richard have settled in nicely to the higher division and host Squires Gate at Mossie Park on Saturday.  Charnock started their campaign last Saturday and stuck five past Barton at their own ground but Barton did make a fist of it, knocking in three themselves.  However the result certainly made a statement of intent and this was backed up on Tuesday where they put another four goals past Padiham in a 4-1 win on their home turf.

Squires Gate were themselves on the end of a 0-4 score-line in their opening game away at Hanley last Saturday.  They will be hoping to match the changes off the field with a change of luck on it although given the start Charnock have had this doesn’t look an easy ask at this point.

Northwich Victoria have certainly hit the ground running and they will be looking to maintain that good start as they host neighbours, Winsford United at Townfield.  Last Saturday, Vics’ came away with an impressive 2-4 away win over Padiham, a club who like themselves are expected to challenge this season.  Their good form continued in midweek with another notable performance, defeating City of Liverpool 3-2 in their first home league game.

Winsford also got off to a good start with a 1-0 win over Barnoldswick at the Barton Stadium, a goal in the 74th Minute from Michael Koral giving the home side all three points.  This has all of the makings of a great local derby.
