As we approach the business end of the season, fixtures each week take on added meaning, and there were certainly plenty of talking points to emerge from the weekend’s games.

In the Premier Division, Atherton Collieries continue to set the pace at the top with a 3-1 home win over Ashton Athletic, Ben Hardcastle, Jordan Cover and Gareth Peet on target for Colls.

Runcorn Linnets remain second, two points behind Colls, and they were involved in one of the most dramatic finales of the day, when they won 2-1 at fellow promotion hopefuls Bootle.

The Bucks were 1-0 up with four minutes remaining through a goal from Ben Hodkinson, but then Michael Simpson and Daniel McKenna struck to pinch the points for Linnets.

Bootle stay in third place, three points ahead of Runcorn Town who had a comfortable 5-0 win over New Mills at the Pavilions, Mark Reed bagging a hat trick.

1874 Northwich stay in fifth, and avenged a home defeat by Padiham a few weeks ago by turning the tables and winning 3-1 in the return fixture in East Lancashire.

Kieron Pickup, who scored both Padiham gaols in the previous game was once again on target for the Storks, but goals from Ryan Mitchell, Tom Bailey and Scott McGowan secured the points for the Greens.

A goal by Carlos Mendes Gomes in the 22nd minute proved to be decisive as West Didsbury & Chorlton beat Abbey Hey 1-0 at Brookburn Road, and a Sean Sherwood goal six minutes from time won the game for Irlam by the same score at home to Maine Road.

On Friday night, goals from Bobby Langford and Anthony Lynch earned AFC Darwen a 2-0 win at AFC Liverpool, a result that became all the more significant when Nelson lost 2-1 at home to Hanley Town on Saturday.

Second half goals from Dan Cope and Theo Stair won the game for Hanley, results which mean Nelson are now 13 points from safety behind AFC Darwen.

A hat trick from captain Kyle Riley was the highlight of Winsford United’s 4-2 home win over Squires Gate, and a thriller at the Silentnight Stadium ended in a 3-3 draw between Barnoldswick Town and Congleton Town. Two goals in the last twenty minutes from Callum Jones rescued a point for the visitors.

In the First Division, City of Liverpool had no game, but all the other promotion contenders picked up victories as the chase at the top of the table becomes all the more fascinating.

Litherland REMYCA stay top after a 2-1 win at Atherton LR, although it took an 84th minute winner from Colin Quirk to clinch the points for Remy.

Charnock Richard moved into third place with an impressive 7-0 win at Daisy Hill, in which six different scorers got on the scoresheet for the visitors, Carl Grimshaw netting twice.

Charnock Richard are ahead on goal difference from Whitchurch Alport, who slipped into fourth place after 1-0 defeat at home to Silsden, Nicholas McNally scoring the only goal on the stroke of half time for the Cobbydalers.

Widnes have been threatening to move into a play off spot for several weeks, and they finally did so with a 2-1 win over Cheadle Town at the Select Security Stadium, in which Chad Whyte scored both goals for Joey Dunn’s men.

Alsager Town occupy the final play off spot, with goals from Taylor Attrell and Mark Grice seeing them through to a 2-1 win at Holker Old Boys.

They edge ahead of Sandbach United on goal difference, who stay in contention after Joshua Lundstram and Christopher Jackson were on target in the 2-0 win over Chadderton.

Prestwich Heys are also still in contention, with two goals from Daniel White earning them a 2-1 win over bottom club Ashton Town at Adie Moran Park.

For a while it looked like Eccleshall would claim a valuable point in their fight to avoid finishing in the relegation zone, but two late goals from Ryan Errington and Rhys Graham clinched a 4-2 win for Carlisle City at Pershall Park.

Brendan Price, Daniel Tinsley and Daniel Graham scored for FC Oswestry Town in 3-0 win at AFC Blackpool.
