Yellow cup fever (again)

Ashton Athletic delivered another memorable cup tie moment last Tuesday night, when they defeated Chorley 5-4 on penalties in the semi-final of the Partners Foundation Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy at the County Ground in Leyland.

Earlier in the season the Yellows blitzed Evo-Stik League side Mossley 7-2 in the FA Cup at Brocstedes Park in an outstanding performance, before losing 5-0 to FC Halifax Town in the next round, so to knock out a team that currently sit four points ahead of the Yorkshiremen in the Vanarama National League North was no mean achievement.

Everyone at Brocstedes Park can now look forward to the final at Bolton Wanderers’ Macron Stadium, which promises to be another great night for everyone of a Yellow persuasion.

Toffees licked by Remy

It’s not often we can trot out a variation on one of the most commonly used newspaper headlines involving Everton in the context of our league, but there’s no better way to sum a fantastic night in the history of Litherland REMYCA after their 1-0 win over the Toffees in the quarter final of the Liverpool Senior Cup.

A crowd of 414 witnessed Phil Stafford’s men take the not inconsiderable scalp of an experienced Everton side, and they can now look forward to another big game in the semi-final when they face Southport at Haig Avenue – who, of course, they beat last season in the same competition on another memorable night at Litherland Sports Centre.

Sitting at the top of the First Division table, and a tasty cup tie to look forward to - the games can’t come quickly enough for the men in red at the moment.

Every Away Day is a Winding Road

When they joined our league in the summer, everyone at Carlisle City was well aware of the journeys they would need to make on a regular basis up and down the M6 over the course of the season, and on Saturday they made their longest yet, a 170 mile trip to face FC Oswestry Town at the Venue.

Not since the days that Workington were in our league in the late 1990s has a side had to make such a long trip for a league fixture, and unfortunately for James Tose’s men, they weren’t able to head back home with a victory, as second half goals from Town’s Daniel Tinsley and Jack Harris cancelled out Simon Tucker’s opener for City.

Hopefully the City boys enjoyed the day out anyway, and with a 162 mile trip to Eccleshall scheduled for Saturday 25th March, they can now start planning for another long away day.

Charnock back on track

One team who seem to have put a mid-season blip out of their system are Charnock Richard, who moved themselves right back into the promotion frame with a 3-2 win at league leaders Litherland REMYCA on Saturday.

As we moved into March, Andy Westwell’s men had only won once in five games since the turn of the year, but successive wins at home to FC Oswestry Town and then at Remy suggests that rumours of their demise were greatly exaggerated.

The First Division promotion chase is an absolutely fascinating one, and Charnock look like they will be right in the thick of it.

Heys like these

The Prestwich Heys winning bandwagon continued to rumble forward on Saturday, with the 2-0 win at Ashton Town being their fifth straight win.

In total, the red men have won eight of their last ten games, which is promotion form in anyone’s language, and has hauled them from mid-table into serious contention for a promotion play off place.

With plenty of games in hand on the teams above them, Heys face a busy run in, and with games against Charnock Richard and Sandbach United to come in the next couple of weeks, they are certainly well placed to have a say in the shake up at the end of the season.
