Litherland Remyca set-up a Liverpool Senior Cup semi-final tie against Southport after Sam Wilkie’s first half header handed them a 1-0 quarter-final win over Everton side in front of a record crowd at Litherland Sports Park.
Phil Stafford’s side are no strangers to cup upsets in this competition, having already dumped Evo-Stik North side Burscough out in the Preliminary Round. The Remy then saw off fellow Hallmark Security league side St Helens Town to set up this mouth-watering quarter-final tie. But this victory will rank among the Remy's very best of their fifty-eight-year history.
Everton, who are the reigning champions of this competition, fielded a youthful looking side, but despite a lack of first-time presence, there was still plenty of talent on show. Morgan Feeney and Alex Denney have both been capped at various youth levels for England, while the Blues starting eleven also featured David Henen, the Belgium winger who cost the Toffees £200,000, when he completed his move from Greek side Olympiacos in 2015.
And it was Henen and his side who started the brighter, with Daniel Bramhall going close inside the opening five minutes. The former Olympiacos man advanced down the Everton right before crossing for Bramhall – but the Blues left-winger could only fire over from inside the box.
The Toffees continued to press in the opening stages with Bassaia Sambou firing into the side netting after being sent clear by Bramhall, before the unmarked Alex Denny headed wide after connecting with Bramhall’s cross from the right.
To their credit, however, Phil Stafford’s side grew into the game and went close to opening the scoring when Colin Quirk fired wide from the edge of the box - before Alex Ryan’s effort was comfortably dealt with by Joe Hilton in the Everton goal.
But on thirty-four minutes, the only goal of the game would arrive. Colin Quirk’s corner wasn’t dealt with by the Everton defence with Stephen King then crossing for Wilkie, who headed home from inside the six-yard-box.
David Unsworth’s side rallied from going a goal down and went close equalising on the stroke of half-time. Morgan Feeney connected perfectly with another Bramhall cross from the right – but Remyca goalkeeper Sean Lake produced a fine point-blank save to deny the Blues captain.
The first real chance of the second fell the way of Everton, but Sambou dragged his effort wide of the far post after being sent clear by Denny. While at the other end, Colin McDonald saw his effort blocked by Matthew Foulds – before James McGrane fired the rebound straight at Hilton.
Despite most of the closing stages being played in Remyca half, their backline, which had been expertly marshaled all night by Stephen King, held firm to comfortably see the game out and make it a memorable night for all involved with REMYCA.
