The curtain came down on 2016 with fixtures spread across three days, a variety of kick off times, and a mix of results that impacted on the top and bottom of both divisions.
In the Premier Division, just four points separate the top five, and Runcorn Town still head the table but their lead has been trimmed after a 1-1 draw at home to Squires Gate. A Craig Cairns penalty on the stroke of half time had given Town a lead they held until the 90th minute when Brett Dawson salvaged a point for Gate.
Bootle are a point behind after scoring four goals for the second game in a row, Josh Hamilton netting twice in the 4-1 win at Nelson.
Atherton Collieries are level with Bootle on points after they also won in East Lancashire, with goals from Jake Kenny, Jamie Forbes and a Jordan Cover penalty rebound earning them a 3-1 win at Padiham on Friday night.
Four second half goals for Runcorn Linnets at Irlam without reply from the home side keeps Michael Ellison’s men in fourth place, and 1874 Northwich are fifth after a 6-1 Friday night win at Cammell Laird 1907, in which Tom Bailey struck twice.
Having lost a three goal lead on Boxing Day at Bootle, AFC Liverpool came back from two goals down to triumph 3-2 at home to West Didsbury & Chorlton. Jason Carey, Jack Leamey and Emini Adegbenro were the men on target for the Reds.
A Mark Threlfall hat trick was the highlight of Barnoldswick Town’s 4-0 win at Ashton Athletic, and Winsford United left it late before sealing a 4-2 win over Congleton Town in the Cheshire derby, with Kyle Riley’s second goal of the afternoon and a strike from Jordan Johnson both hitting the back of the net in the last four minutes.
In the other game, second half goals from Declan Cunliffe and Conor Gaul earned AFC Darwen a 2-2 draw at Maine Road.
In the First Division, it’s Whitchurch Alport who continue to set the pace at the top, with Alex Hughes delivering the only goal of the game in the 85th minute to seal a 1-0 win at Alsager Town.
Charnock Richard are four points behind in second place but with three games in hand on Alport, and they kept up the pressure with a 3-0 win over Bacup Borough. After a goalless first half, an Own Goal broke the deadlock, and Spencer Bibby and Carl Grimshaw added their own goalscoring contributions.
The eye catching score of the day was at the Stockport Sports Village, where City of Liverpool FC recorded their record league victory with a 10-0 win over Stockport Town, David Forbes and Tom Peterson both grabbing hat tricks.
The Purples are in third place, five points off the top.
Sandbach United occupy the final play off place after five different players got on the scoresheet in their 5-1 win at FC Oswestry Town, and Prestwich Heys kept up their play off hopes with a 3-0 St Helens Town. It was a good day for the Baguley clan, with Jamie opening the scoring and then Christopher adding two more.
Joshua Eastwood was on target for Silsden in the 1-0 win at Atherton LR, and a David Swarbrick penalty and Samuel Joel’s second goal of the afternoon in the space of a minute ensured a 3-2 win for Holker Old Boys against Daisy Hill.
In the Thursday night game at Gillford Park, a hat trick from Michael Reed helped Carlisle City to a 4-2 win over Ashton Town.
