2016 draws to an end this week, so we thought we would have a look at how teams have faired in this calendar year, starting with the First Division.
The First Division is really competitive this season, with just twelve points separating the top six sides. And its Whitchurch Alport who top the table after an amazing turnaround this season compared to last season when they finished bottom of the table.
From January to the end of the season, Whitchurch picked up just four points from 14 games, with only Atherton LR picking up less (3 points). However from their 25 games this season they have picked up 54 points already!
Litherland REMYCA and Alsager Town are the two clubs who have picked up the most points in this calendar year with both clubs picking up 80 points since January 1st. REMYCA's total came in 42 games, with 32 points in the second half of last season and 48 points so far this season.
Alsager have also picked up 80 points, despite relegation from the Premier Division in April. Looking at the Premier Division table from the second half of last season, Alsager actually recorded the 7th most points of all teams, with 34 points from their final 23 games of last season. This coupled with the 46 points they have recorded this year gives them 80 for the calendar year.
REMYCA have also scored the most goals this calendar year with 104 goals from 42 games played. This is one more than our St Helens Town, who scored 103 goals in their 42 games in 2016. At the other end of the scale, Ashton Town and Atherton LR have both scored 41 times in 2016, a lot less than the third least who was AFC Blackpool with 61 goals.
Looking at goals conceded, and the league table now reflects the status of the year in total. Eccleshall have conceded 133 goals in their 45 games played in 2016, with Atherton LR just behind on 127 goals from 42 games. AFC Blackpool (108), Ashton Town (103) and Whitchurch Alport (102) are the others conceding over a hundred goals. The best defence this year was Stockport Town, conceding 65 goals in the calendar year in 39 games.
Of all First Division clubs, it is AFC Blackpool who played the most games in 2016 with 47 games, 22 coming in the second half of last season and 25 already this season. This is 11 more than Widnes, who played the least of all First Division clubs who were in NWCFL action in both seasons (note new clubs having been omitted from this review).
