Five Things We Learned - w/e Saturday 10th December 2016

There’s no business like “goalbusiness”
Nets were bulging all across the League on Saturday, with the 22 games producing a total of 106 goals, which is an all time record goals haul for a single full programme of fixtures since the League began in 1982.
An average of just under five goals a game suggests entertainment galore across the board, with only three games out of the 22 failing to deliver less than three goals, and the games at Squires Gate and Chadderton contained nine apiece.
We all know our League produces great entertainment every week anyway, and Saturday’s goal fest just underlines what we already knew.
Up for a County Cup
In midweek, there were two more additions to the list of clubs who are in with a shout of success in their County Cup competitions.
Ashton Athletic and Whitchurch Alport reached the semi-finals of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy and Shropshire Senior Cup respectively with Tuesday night victories, joining 1874 Northwich who were due to play Witton Albion in the semi-final of the Mid-Cheshire Cup this week, until Albion had a replay in the FA Trophy.
Throw in Silsden in the quarter final of the West Riding Cup, West Didsbury & Chorlton at the same stage in the Manchester Senior Cup, four clubs in the last eight of the Liverpool Senior Cup and a number of others still to play in the early rounds of the Cheshire Senior Cup, and there must be a decent chance of County cup success for one of our clubs this season.
Close Cover before striking
One striker very much in form at the minute is Atherton Collieries’ Jordan Cover, who followed up his two goals against Penrith in the FA Vase with another double in the 3-0 win over Hanley Town on Saturday.
It’s now 10 goals in 7 games for the in-form front man, and with Colls already well served in the goalscoring department with the likes of Mark Battersby and Ben Hardcastle in the ranks, future opponents now have yet another goal threat to contend with when Colls come to town.
Goals all over for Bucks
We have referred to Bootle’s goalscoring abilities on more than one occasion already this season, but once again their goal power caught the eye over the past week.
Twelve goals in two games is the sort of strike rate that is becoming a common occurrence for Joe Doran’s side, and they are not short of contributors to the goalscoring story either, with seven different players chipping in to the total of 12 goals they rattled in against St Helens Town and AFC Darwen.
It will take a good team to keep a clean sheet against the Bucks at the moment.
Heys hit back
A shout out must go to Prestwich Heys who recorded a morale boosting 5-2 win over FC Oswestry Town at Adie Moran Park on Saturday.
Heys came into the game on a run that had seen them lose six of their last seven games, and with their opponents on a more than useful run of form themselves, it wasn’t one to mark as an obvious home win for a betting man.
But thanks in no small way to a hat trick from Paul Tierney, Heys picked up a valuable win, with the gap between themselves and play off places now back to seven points with less than half the season gone, the Heys faithful will be hoping that Saturday’s result will kick start their season once again.
