The first weekend in December brought unusually mild weather, resulting in a full and uninterrupted fixture list, and games across four different competitions provided plenty of drama and talking points to contemplate.
Two of our clubs carried the league banner in the Buildbase FA Vase 3rd Round, and we emerged with a 50% success rate, after Bootle’s heartbreaking exit and a fine win for Atherton Collieries.
It was looking good for Bootle when they took the lead through Ryan Cox with five minutes remaining of their game at Cleethorpes Town, but in an incredible turnaround goals from the home side’s Brody Robertson in the 87th and 90th minutes sent Bootle tumbling out of the competition on the back of a 2-1 defeat.
However, the news was much better from Frenchfields Park in Penrith, where three second half goals clinched a fine 3-0 win for Atherton Collieries over their Northern League opponents.
Matty Grimshaw broke the deadlock on 58 minutes, and two further goals from Jordan Cover ensured a passage into the Fourth Round for the first time in the club’s history.
The remaining three Reusch First Division Cup Quarter Finals took place, with City of Liverpool already having clinched their place in the last four with a 3-0 win at St Helens Town on Thursday night.
An 85th minute goal from Alfred Hammond was the difference between the sides at Gillford Park, with Sandbach United progressing at the expense of Carlisle City, and the away side were also the victors at Mossie Park, where Widnes turned in an impressive display to defeat Charnock Richard 4-1.
Thomas Mitchell, George Lomax, Karl Ledsham and Christopher Lomax were on target for Joey Dunn’s side.
The quartet in the semi-finals is completed by Holker Old Boys, who won 3-2 after extra time against Whitchurch Alport at Rakesmoor Lane, after the sides were tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Jamie Pattinson’s opener for the Old Boys just before the break was cancelled out by Simon Everall on 62 minutes, and Pattinson again and Samuel Joel put the home side in the driving seat in the first half of extra time before Dean Twigg reduced the arrears.
In the Premier Division, Runcorn Town took advantage of Bootle and Atherton Colls being in Vase action to extend their lead at the top of the table to five points with a 3-0 win at Barnton.
Joseph Holt and Craig Cairns had Town two up at the break, and David Forbes added a third goal with two minutes remaining.
Runcorn Linnets are in third place, seven points behind their town rivals, after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to Abbey Hey.
Two goals in the opening 20 minutes from Brian Matthews on his home debut gave Linnets a great start, but second half goals from Nico Collins and Oliver Ford earned Abbey a point.
1874 Northwich are fifth in the table after a 4-2 win at New Mills in which Tom Bailey scored twice, and Hanley Town are one place behind them after a 3-1 win at home to AFC Darwen. Dan Cope scored twice for Town in a game where all the goals came in the second half.
Two goals from Matty Boland helped Irlam to a 3-1 win at home to Squires Gate, and Michael White and Emini Adegbenro were on target for AFC Liverpool in the 2-0 win at Maine Road.
Richard Bailey marked his return to Congleton Town in fine style with a 90th minute winner to clinch a 2-1 win over West Didsbury & Chorlton, and five different players got on the scoresheet for Padiham in the 5-2 win at Winsford United.
Nelson earned a valuable point in their quest to beat the drop, goals from Christopher Anderson and Yves Zama in the last 14 minutes salvaging a 2-2 draw at home to Ashton Athletic.
Goals in each half from Zack Dale and Joseph Gaughan earned Barnoldswick Town a 2-0 win over Cammell Laird 1907, ensuring that Lairds remain bottom of the table.
In the First Division, with the top three in cup action, Litherland REMYCA narrowed between themselves and the top trio by picking up a point from their 2-2 draw at home to Chadderton.
Remy had to come from two goals down to pick up a point, thanks to strikes from Jake Connor and Lennon Whewell.
Alsager Town remain in fifth place despite suffering their second successive home league defeat, going 2-1 at home to Prestwich Heys.
Michael Lennon gave the Bullets a first half lead, but a Gregory Wills penalty and a winner from Lee Bruce pinched the points for Heys.
FC Oswestry Town continued their recent fine form, and their 2-1 win over Cheadle Town at the Venue moved them into the final play off spot, thanks to goals from Bredon Price and David Hartshorn.
Silsden were the highest scorers of the weekend, rattling in six without reply at AFC Blackpool, Nicholas McNally and Mark Trueman both netting twice.
Daisy Hill’s Ashley Stott kept up his quite remarkable run of goalscoring form, with a hat trick in his side’s 4-3 win at Stockport Town, and first half goals from Luke Edwards and Dale Korie-Butler ensured a 2-0 win for St Helens Town at Ashton Town that sees the home side remain at the foot of the table.
