With the majority of this weekend’s matches being played on the afternoon of Bonfire Night, it is only fitting that sparks were flying in some scintillating contests in the Hallmark Security League Premier Division, 1st Division and The Reusch First Division Cup 2nd Round.

The first of this weekend’s games was played on Friday night, as a crowd of 96 saw Atherton Collieries move to the top of the Premier Division, albeit temporarily, after they gained their fifth win in a row with a 2-1 victory over Abbey Hey.

However, Runcorn Town replaced them at the summit with a good performance in a 6-1 away win against Squires Gate.

Third placed Bootle produced the biggest result of the day with a 7-1 thrashing of high flying Hanley Town. This saw Bootle move ahead of Runcorn Linnets on goals scored, even though the Linnets managed to defeat Nelson 3-1 at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.

1874 Northwich remain fifth after an early Tom Bailey strike was the only goal away at midtable Irlam. West Didsbury and Chorlton conceded 4 goals in the final 7 minutes as they blew a 2-1 lead to lose 5-2 at home to Ashton Athletic, with an Adam Gilchrist hat trick inspiring a sparkling comeback.

Elsewhere, Padiham moved up four places to seventh position as they defeated Winsford United 4-2 for their fifth victory in a row. A 3-2 home victory for Maine Road against Congleton Town moved them three points ahead of their opponents in the table. Newly promoted Barnton moved out of the drop zone with a 2-1 home victory over top half AFC Liverpool, who dropped down a position to ninth in the table.

Finally, the points were shared in the important bottom of the table clash between AFC Darwen and New Mills in a 1-1 draw. This was also the result between bottom side Cammell Laird 1907, who remain winless, and Barnoldswick Town.

Due to cup action dominating the schedule of most First Division clubs this weekend, there were only three games played. This didn’t stop some explosive results, as Eccleshall were on the wrong end of a 4-0 score line at home to fellow basement boys AFC blackpool. Bottom club Ashton Town remain with only one win this season as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat away to FC Oswestry Town who are back with a bang as they claimed their first win in three matches. Litherland REMYCA cemented their place in the play off positions, as they took the spoils in a 4-2 victory over Bacup Borough at Litherland Sports Park.

For most First Division sides, this weekend was a chance to take a break from league action and concentrate on progressing in The Reusch First Division Cup competition. Whitchurch Alport managed to progress to the last eight with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Alsager Town. Widnes, on the back of their midweek victory over Skelmesdale United, matched that score line as they dispatched of Prestwich Heys by a four goal margin. Sandbach United went one better as they produced a five star performance to demolish Stockport Town 5-0 as they progressed to the quarter final. City of Liverpool FC were the final team to progress in the southern section with a narrow 2-1 victory over Cheadle Town.

In the northern section, Atherton LR’s winless run continues as a 3-2 defeat against Carlisle City dumped them out of the competition. Charnock Richard finished a game in 90 minutes for the first time in almost three weeks as they progressed with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Chadderton. Holker Old Boys booked their place in the quarters with a 3-1 win against Silsden, and finally St Helens Town managed their first clean sheet of the season as they defeated Daisy Hill 2-0.
