Bears mean goals

If you are looking for goalscoring action at the moment, then any game involving Congleton Town has to be on the hit list.

Saturday’s 4-3 defeat to Prestwich Heys in the Macron Cup continued an amazing run of goalscoring games involving the Bears that extends back seven games. There have been a total of 26 goals in their last three games, and since the start of September, only one game out of the seven they have played has had less than five goals – and there were four in that one.

Road draw a blank

On these pages last week, we drew attention to Maine Road’s goalscoring record, stating that as at last Monday morning they had scored in every game and only scored less than two goals in three of their games.

As if to just underline that statistc, Road promptly went out on Monday night and scored five against Bootle, so it was “hold the front page” news on Saturday at 5 pm when it emerged that they had lost 1-0 at Atherton Collieries.

It was always going to be a tough test at high flying Colls, who have the second meanest defence in the Premier Division, so it’s fair to assume that the Road goalscoring machine will soon be back producing net busters again.

Reds on form

One team quietly going about their business at the moment are AFC Liverpool, whose 4-1 victory over Cammell Laird 1907 on Friday night was their fifth win in six games.

The Reds are tucked in nicely among the promotion contenders, six points behind league leaders 1874 Northwich and having two games in hand, and with some impressive goalscoring firepower in their ranks, are likely to pose a threat to anyone with Premier Division promotion aspirations.

Away days agree with Charnock Richard

Charnock Richard’s amazing away form continued with their 5-1 win at Ashton Town on Saturday, their third win on the road in the space of a week.

Out of ten away games played this season, Charnock have won nine and drawn one, and the victories have been achieved at some of the furthest flung places they will visit this season, including Eccleshall, Whitchurch, Harrogate, Whickham and Holker Old Boys.

There’s an old saying that there is no place like home, but travelling far and beyond the confines of rural Lancashire doesn’t seem to worry Andy Westwell’s men.

Towey form good news for Joey

As new Widnes manager Joey Dunn starts to shape his squad for a promotion challenge, he will have been heartened by the recent good form of striker Kevin Towey.

Saturday’s hat trick against Alsager Town took Kevin’s goal tally to seven in the space of two weeks, and with the pair having successfully worked together at Runcorn Linnets, the partnership looks likely to be equally as fruitful a few miles down the road at the Select Security Stadium.
