FA Cup disappointment for Ashton Athletic

The Hallmark Security League’s interest in this season’s Emirates FA Cup competition is over after our sole remaining club, Ashton Athletic were soundly beaten 5-0 by National League North side FC Halifax Town.

The game was played in warm Autumn sunshine on an excellent playing surface at Brocstedes Park, attended by a club record 479 spectators who were treated to an entertaining game, where the visitors’ clinical finishing and general dominance saw them come out comfortably on top.

Any nerves the visitors had about a potential cup giant killing upset were soon eased when they took an early lead in only the second minute when Tom Denton headed home a cross to put the Shaymen ahead.

Their second came on 31 minutes when Danny Hone headed home from a corner, and the third followed just five minutes later when Jordan Sinnott fired a powerful shot past Ashton goalkeeper Martin Pearson.

Any hopes Ashton Athletic had in getting back into the game were well and truly quashed with two goals in quick succession, early in the second half. The fourth, on 53 minutes, came after Alex Simmons cut in from the right to fire past Pearson from the edge of the area.

Seconds later, Richard Peniket tapped home from a Simmons cross from the right.

Despite the score, Ashton continued to battle away but couldn’t penetrate a strong and organised Halifax defence but they can take solace that they have won some new friends as a result of their cup run.

Ashton’s man of the match was goalkeeper Martin Pearson who, despite conceding five, kept the score down with several vital saves in what was a busy day for the Ashton number one between the sticks.
