Yellow Cup Fever at Ashton Athletic

Over the years, clubs in our League have enjoyed some good results in the FA Cup against clubs in higher leagues, but Ashton Athletic's 7-2 win over Evo-Stik League Division One North side Mossley is up there with the best of them.

Against a side from a higher division that had won their previous two away league games, the Yellows delivered a performance that will live long in the memory of those who watched it, on a day when torrential rain and a sodden pitch provided a challenge that any footballer would have struggled with.  Club Chairman Jimmy Whyte tweeted a message on Saturday night saying it was his greatest day involved with the club, which pretty much sums up the day.

Athletic can now look forward to the Second Qualifying Round for the first time ever, in the knowledge that in order to get there they recorded one of the finest results in their club's history.

Away days agree with Town

Runcorn Town moved into second place in the Premier Division table with a 1-0 win at New Mills, once again showing that life on the road obviously agrees with them.

The win now means four out of four on the road in league games so far, and trips to South Manchester to face West Didsbury & Chorlton and Maine Road in the next week will no doubt be greeted with relish by Chris Herbert's men.

Unlucky 13 for the Cobbydalers

It could be a future trivia quiz question - which team scored 13 league goals across two consecutive games, but only picked up three points from the two games? The answer of course is Silsden, who followed up their midweek 7-2 win at home to Daisy Hill with a 6-6 draw at FC Oswestry Town.

Considering this was the first ever meeting of the two sides, it certainly sets the bar high as far as expectations are concerned for the return game at the Angel Telecom Stadium later in the season.

Incidentally, the last time a team scored six goals in a game and didn't win was on the 1st April 2014 when Rochdale Town beat Atherton Collieries 8-6 in a Division One game.

All looking good for Charnock Richard

When a team steps up into a new league, if any one offered them second place in the table having played almost a quarter of their league games, they would take it.

That's the position that Charnock Richard find themselves in after their 3-0 win against Chadderton on Saturday, a result which saw them keep a clean sheet for the fifth time in their nine games.

It's early days yet, but manager Andy Westwell can be happy that his squad have more than demonstrated already that they are capable of mounting a challenge this season.

The Great Unpredictables

At the moment, the only thing predictable about Daisy Hill is their great unpredictability.

After losing 6-2 at Carlisle City and 7-2 at Silsden, on paper the last thing Daisy needed was the visit of league leaders City of Liverpool to New Sirs, fresh from an 8-0 win over Atherton LR which maintained their 100% start to the season.

But a 2-1 win for Daisy sent the form spinning well and truly out of the window, and with Garforth Town from the Northern Counties East League due to visit Daisy for an FA Vase tie at the weekend, it would take a brave man to predict the outcome of that one.
