The opening day of the season in the newly named Hallmark Security Football League saw all the Premier Division teams and four from the First Division competing in the Emirates F.A Cup Extra Preliminary Round, while the remaining First Division clubs, including six new clubs, took their bow in league fixtures.

There were seven all-HSFL ties, two of which will need replays next week.

A Tom Bailey penalty ten minutes from time was enough to see 1874 Northwich through by 2-1 in the local derby clash at home to Barnton, and two goals from Ryan Cox helped Bootle to a 3-1 win at Abbey Hey.

Joe Brownhill’s goal just after the hour saw Ashton Athletic through to a 1-0 win at AFC Blackpool, and the goals came at the beginning and the end of the game between Atherton Collieries and Bacup Borough, with Colls going three up inside 20 minutes, before Bacup scored twice in the last eleven minutes to give the scoreline more respectability.

New Mills didn’t have the happiest of returns to our League, with first goals from Mike Koral, Brian Matthews and Scott Sephton earning Congleton Town a 3-0 half time lead that they kept until the final whistle.

West Didsbury & Chorlton and AFC Liverpool shared a goalless draw at Brookburn Road, while AFC Darwen and Cammell Laird 1907 shared six goals in an entertaining encounter at the WEC Anchor Ground.

In the other ties involving our clubs against teams from other leagues, six progressed through to the next round, four have replays next week, and for three others interest in the competition is over for another season.

Two first half goals from Dave Harry set Alsager Town on the way to a good 4-1 win over Barton Town Old Boys, and a goal in each half from Zac Dale, one a penalty secured Nelson’s place in the next round with a 2-1 win up at Ashington.

Another man on the mark twice was Nathan Cotterell of Winsford United, who scored both of the Blues’ goals in the 2-1 win at Staveley Miners Welfare.

Cheadle Town also had a good away win at Northern Counties East League opponents, winning 3-1 at Penistone Church, as did Squires Gate for whom Joe Noblet’s penalty proved to be decisive in a 1-0 win at Maltby Main.

Padiham also began the season with a win, Alex Murphy’s second half goal earning a 1-0 win at home to Team Northumbria.

Goals in the last ten minutes from Joe Gaughan and Aaron Hollindrake earned Barnoldswick Town another bite of the cherry with a 2-2 draw against Dunston UTS, and Silsden will host Bridlington Town in a midweek replay, after a second half goal from Luke Richardson secured a 1-1 draw on the East coast.

When Louis Edwards put Maine Road 3-2 ahead at home to Nostell Miners Welfare with only seven minutes left, it looked like Road had booked their place in the next round, but a last minute equaliser meant the sides will meet again in a midweek replay.

Hanley Town have another opportunity in midweek to move into the next round after Dan Cope’s 89th minute equaliser earned a 1-1 draw at Sporting Khalsa, but for three other clubs, the chance for cup glory is over for another season.

After going two up inside the opening 16 minutes, Hemsworth Miners Welfare eventually won 2-1 at home against Runcorn Linnets, and Parkgate beat Irlam by the same score.

Runcorn Town went down 3-2 at Pontefract Collieries.

In the First Division, four of the six new clubs celebrated their arrival with opening day wins, and all of them had players writing their names in the record books by scoring the club's first goal in the League.

Game of the day was at Gillford Park, where goals from Jordan Atkinson and Mark Boyd in the opening nine minutes gave Carlisle City a great start at home to St Helens Town. However, Town fought back and it took a goal in the 86th minute from Mark Birch to secure an opening day 4-3 win for the Cumbrians.

Two goals from Christopher Dykes set City of Liverpool on the way to a 3-1 win at Chadderton, and FC Oswestry Town won by the same score at Ashton Town.

Charnock Richard won 3-0 at Eccleshall to record their first win in the league, and the afternoon began well for Sandbach United when Daniel Bartle gave them an 8th minute lead at home to Holker Old Boys.

But David Swarbrick equalised on the stroke of half time, and Samuel Joel’s goal midway through the second half earned a 2-1 away win for the visitors.

There was a similar story at Prestwich Heys when Erike Sousa gave them a 7th minute lead at home to Widnes, but two goals from Jason McShane put the visitors on the road to a 3-1 win.

The remaining two games ended in home wins for Whitchurch Alport who won 2-0 against Daisy Hill, and Litherland REMYCA beat Atherton LR 3-0.
