Elevenses For Barnton

Barnton's 11-1 win over Whitchurch Alport on Easter Monday was only the second time that score has been recorded in NWCFL history.

The other previous occurrence was on 10th Jan 1998, when Fleetwood Freeport beat Stantondale by the same score in a Division Two game.

One other point worth mentioning on the game is in relation to the times of the last three goals Barnton scored.  We have no complete records on goal times for every game in league history going back to 1982, but it is fair to say that there won't have been many instances in the past of a player scoring three goals with the times all recorded as being in the 90th minute, as Kevin Towey achieved.

It's not the first time that Kevin has scored a rapid fire hat trick in a NWCFL game, as Runcorn Linnets Chairman Derek Greenwood recalls.

"The story reminded us at the Linnets of our game at Stone Dominoes back in October 2011 when Kevin scored a hat trick in the first 4 minutes of the game", said Derek.

"He is probably the only player ever to score hat tricks in the first and last 4 minutes of games,  The final result that day had even more goals, and finished Stone Dominoes 5 Runcorn Linnets 8".

The Linnets match report from the day records that Kevin opened the scoring after 40 seconds with a header, in the very next attack, only a minute later and it was 2-0 and a second with a shot off the post, and he completed his hat trick on 4 minutes when he went past his defender, cut back away from goal to create enough room for a left foot shot that, even without the aid of the deflection it did receive, would have gone in.

Barnton are the fourth club to scored 11 goals in a game in League history, as there have also been two 11-0 victories in the past - Maine Road  v Newton (Division Two) on the 29th October 1988, and Wigan Robin Park v Ashton Town (Division One) on the 21st April 2012.
