A cup semi final and plenty of games affecting promotion and relegation issues heralded the start of a busy Easter weekend programme.

In the MEN United Cup Semi Final, Atherton Collieries edged past Barnton 1-0 at Alder House, Mark Truffas scoring the only goal in the 17th minute of a closely fought game. Colls will now face Colne in the final in May.

In the Premier Division, both Runcorn Linnets and Colne took advantage of Colls' cup tie to pick up maximum points from their games and move further ahead in the promotion chase.

Linnets stay top after a 3-1 win at Silsden, Freddie Potter scoring twice to clinch a win that further damages Silsden’s hopes of avoiding relegation.

Colne won 2-1 in their derby clash at Barnoldswick Town, with recent signing Ben Wharton hitting the winner 17 minutes from time.

There were several other games where the results had an impact at the bottom end of the table, and Alsager Town picked up three more precious points as they continued their recent battle for survival with a 1-0 win at home to Bootle.

Jordan Elcock scored the vital goal for the Bullets four minutes before half time, and the win now moves them to within two points of safety, just behind AFC Darwen who drew 2-2 at home to Abbey Hey. Luke McKenna rescued a point with a last minute equaliser for Darwen, who had been two goals down early in the second half.

It’s beginning to look worrying for AFC Blackpool, who remain bottom of the table after going down 2-1 at home to Runcorn Town, Danny Toone scoring the winner for the visitors five minutes from time.

Blackpool’s neighbours Squires Gate are still not out of relegation trouble after losing 2-0 at Cammell Laird 1907, and the other two games in the division both brought away wins.

A Brian Matthews goal in the 28th minute earned Congleton Town a 1-0 win at Nelson, and two goals from leading scorer Kieron Pickup helped Padiham to a 4-1 win at Winsford United.

In the First Division, the fascinating promotion chase continues, with the pack being shuffled once more after several results that affected the automatic and play off positions.

The stand out result came at the Stockport Sports Village, where Stockport Town kept themselves right in the promotion picture with a 1-0 win over league leaders Hanley Town, Christopher Sherrington grabbing the winner with just two minutes to go.

That result allowed second placed Irlam to narrow the gap at the top to five points as they picked up a 3-0 win at Eccleshall, with Liam Morrison, Michael Itela and Christian Lawlor on target for Steve Nixon’s side.

Cheadle Town moved into fourth place with what could turn out to be a crucial 3-1 win at fellow promotion contenders Holker Old Boys. Liam Tongue, Luke Pearson and Antony Trucca scored the goals in Town’s first win at Rakesmoor Lane since 1999.

Litherland REMYCA slipped outside the play off positions on goal difference after losing 2-1 at Rochdale Town, a goal in each half from Adam Latham proving to be decisive for Town.

Three other clubs who haven’t given up hope of clinching a play-off spot all did their chances no harm with important wins.

A hat trick from Anthony Hall was the highlight of Bacup Borough’s 6-0 win at home to Widnes, all the goals coming in a remarkable opening 43 minutes, with four of them arriving in the space of seven minutes.

Five different players got on the scoresheet for St Helens Town in the 5-0 win at Whitchurch Alport, the second time in eleven days they have achieved the feat, and four different scorers contributed to Ashton Town’s 4-0 win at home to Chadderton.

Daisy Hill were two up inside seven minutes at home to Northwich Manchester Villa, but ended up losing 3-2, with Kaden McCabe grabbing the winner for Villa two minutes from time.
