A sudden death penalty shoot out in a cup semi-final, and results that affected the top of and bottom of both divisions, were delivered by the latest round of fixtures at the weekend.

In the Reusch First Division Cup Semi Final, Barnton progressed to the final after a penalty shoot out win over Stockport Town.

A 0-0 score at the end of extra time didn't do justice to a game that produced plenty of chances at both ends, and a draw was probably a fair result after 120 minutes of exciting action.

The resulting penalty shoot out went to sudden death, with Barnton eventually winning 5-4 on penalties. They now face Hanley Town in the Final in April.

In the Premier Division, Runcorn Linnets are still top, despite being held to their first goalless draw of the season at home to West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Their promotion rivals Colne also drew at home, although they had taken the lead against 1874 Northwich through Jason Hart, before Matthew Beadle equalised to earn his side a point.

Those results allowed Atherton Collieries to move back into second place and narrow the gap on Linnets, with a 4-0 win at home to Runcorn Town, Jordan Cover and Mark Battersby both scoring twice.

Several games had an impact on the placings at the bottom of the table, most notably at Silsden where Alsager Town moved off the bottom of the table for the first time since August with a vital 1-0 win over the Cobbydalers which also pulled the two sides level on points. Richard Smith got the all important goal in the 67th minute.

AFC Blackpool now prop up the table after losing 2-1 at Cammell Laird 1907, Jay Clare getting the Lairds winner 18 minutes from time.

AFC Darwen remain just above the drop zone, after losing 2-1 at home to Winsford United, a defeat that will have been even harder to take given that the Winsford goals from Daniel Egan and Ryan Hibbert arrived in the last two minutes of the game.

Squires Gate are now four points ahead of Darwen after picking up a point in a 1-1 draw at Congleton Town, and Padiham moved a step closer to safety with a good 3-1 win at Bootle, Aaron Taylor, Kieron Pickup and Alexander Murphy on target for the Storks.

Elsewhere, Barnoldswick Town won 2-0 at Abbey Hey, and AFC Liverpool drew 1-1 with Nelson.

In the First Division, Hanley Town remain top, but had their lead reduced after losing 3-2 at home to Daisy Hill.

Two goals from Daniel Gregory and one from Matthew Davison, against one from Jonathan Higham gave Daisy a 3-1 lead at the break, and although Matt German pulled a goal back in the second half for Hanley, Daisy held on for a fine win.

With Barnton in cup action, Irlam took the opportunity to leap frog them into second place with a 3-1 win at home to Litherland REMYCA.

Colin McDonald cancelled out Christian Lawlor's opener for Irlam, but second half goals from Jordan Icely and Jordan Southworth secured the points for Steve Nixon's side.

Holker Old Boys moved into fourth place, with two goals from John-Paul Stanway earning them a 2-1 win at Northwich Manchester Villa, and a remarkable game at the Brian Boys West View Stadium between Bacup Borough and St Helens Town ended 3-3.

Town were 3-0 up after 12 minutes, Andy Gillespie scoring twice, but Bacup eventually rescued a point thanks to a hat trick from Matthew Barlow.

The game between Ashton Town and Atherton LR ended goalless, but there were convincing wins in the other two games.

Ronnie McCarthy scored twice for Widnes in their 5-0 win at Eccleshall, and Rochdale Town's Jonathan Thompson grabbed a hat trick in their 5-1 home win over Whitchurch Alport.
