Maine Road are continuing their well-established tradition of giving young players and coaches a chance to perform at first team level.

This season, under the control of new manager Chris Hirst, the average age of the squad is 21 years old, with the “Daddy” being captain John Mason at 28 and the youngest being Joel Senior and Paddy Walsh at 16.

The regular squad of 24 players consists of 19 players who have been regulars in the Reserve team in the past year, with 8 players from The Manchester Saturday FA Cup winning team in May 2014, and 14 members of the squad are aged 19 years old or under.

And, as Secretary Derek Barber explained, there are plenty more young players in the pipeline at Brantingham Road, all waiting to be given a chance by the new manager who has already impressed the committee with the work he has done so far.

“Even though the Reserves are struggling for the right results at the moment, as usual there are an abundance of very talented 16 year olds, who will be soon given their chance at first team level by our manager Chris Hirst”, said Derek.

“Hirsty is only 25 years old himself and he is in his first stint as a manager.  He has acquitted himself extremely well, and kept his enthusiasm in some very difficult moments when some of the players were on holidays or carrying injuries, and some still had school commitments.

“Chris has very good coaching skills, which I know all the players appreciate and he makes training enjoyable. He also works extremely hard behind the scenes and he has been a great addition to Maine Road FC”.
