Chadderton's FA Vase adventure ended in disappointment this afternoon as they fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of Northern Counties East League opponents AFC Mansfield.

Up to now, the FA Vase has provided Steve Patterson's men with some memorable moments this season, but on a heavy and bumpy pitch that made passing football difficult, they were undone by savvy opponents who took a grip on the game with some clinical finishing over the course of the 90 minutes.

In front of their biggest crowd of the season that comprised a sizable travelling support, Chadderton began well and enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but the first warning of problems to come arrived on 13 minutes when AFC Mansfield's Craig Mitchell netted from a flick on, only to be flagged offside.

However, Chadderton's respite was only temporary as the visitors took the lead two minutes later with a well worked goal.

Ryan Williams floated a corner into the box from the left, and AFC Mansfield skipper Chris Timons timed a late run perfectly to get in front of the Chadderton defence and glance a header into the top corner of the net at the near post.

Chadderton hit back and Daniel Murray spurned a good chance when he beat the offside trap from a long ball, but his shot from 20 yards flew wide of the post.

It got worse for Chadderton just after the half hour when AFC Mansfield doubled their advantage with a cool piece of finishing from Ryan Mitchell, who took a great first touch on a ball played into the box to take out a defender before rounding the keeper and rolling the ball into the empty net.

But straight from the restart, Chadderton missed a great chance to get back into the game when John Rogers' header from a corner was cleared off the line, and the ball fell to Dillian O'Connor who fired wide of the goal from six yards.

Two minutes later, O'Connor was unlucky again, when he picked up the ball in midfield and as the defenders backed off, unleashed a cracking 30 yarder that AFC Mansfield keeper Jason White tipped onto the crossbar.

But the visitors finished the half strongly and Chadderton had a let off two minutes before the break when Adam Whitehead tried to win a goal kick by playing the ball against AFC Mansfield's Glyn Coton, but Coton won possession and to the disgust of unmarked team mates in the box, fluffed a shot wide from an acute angle.

It was obvious that Chadderton had to hit the ground running after the restart, and they did create some decent chances in the opening ten minutes.

An Adam Whitehead free kick curled just wide of the near post, a James Curley effort was pushed away for a corner by the keeper, and Daniel Murray had a header cleared away in a good opening spell for the home side.

But committing men forward was always going to create gaps at the back, and the game was effectively over on the hour when AFC Mansfield's Ryan Mitchell drove a low cross into the box after a good break down the left, and Tristan Whitman slid in a full stretch to toe end the ball past Dale Latham in the Chadderton goal for AFC Mansfield's third.

It was a killer blow that knocked the wind out of Chadderton, and the visitors began to turn the screw as they dominated possession and territory.

It wasn't long before the combination of Williams's wing play and crossing with Mitchell's finishing created a fourth goal, Mitchell's glancing header into the bottom corner of the net giving Latham no chance, and a convincing win was wrapped up with a fifth goal 12 minutes from the end.

It was a goal that summed up Chadderton's afternoon, as substitute Jordam Vilums fired a deep cross towards the far post from wide on the right wing that deceived Latham, and ended up in the back of the net via the inside of the post.

Although Chadderton battled valiantly to the end, manager Steve Patterson couldn't hide his disappointment after the final whistle.

"I don't think we gave a true account of ourselves today, we just didn't turn up", he said. "I think too many players got caught up in the occasion.

"I don't think we ever got a proper foothold in the game at any time and just never got going. I feel a bit shell shocked to be honest, I didn't see that coming.

"They (AFC Mansfield) were a very experienced team that did the simple things very well, they got balls in good areas and their finishing was better.

"We never did the simple things well, although maybe I'm playing down how well their back four played. They knew when to sit deep, and hopefully some of our young lads will learn from that today.

"We've just got to make sure we pick the lads up and get a play off place now. That was our target at the start of the year, and this Vase run has been a nice distraction and a bonus.

"We need to get back to the real business now, and hopefully the lads can give a truer account of themselves for the rest of the season".
