2020 Groundhop: Sandbach beat Alsager

Sanndbach United won a massive three points at home to local rivals Asager Town in the opening game of the 2020 Groundhop. A club record crowd of four hundred and fifty five, more than doubling the previous best, witnessed four goals and the first sin-bin in groundhop history.
The game started slowly but it was the visitors who had the better of the chances, and they were awarded a penalty in the eighteenth minute when Josh Lane was pushed in the box by Scott Evans. Stephen Jones took the responsibility from the spot and fired the ball into the top left corner of the net.
The lead didn’t last long, half an hour on the clock and the hosts were back level thanks to a mistake by the visitors keeper. Daniel Bartle saw his shot saved but James McClenaghan couldn’t keep hold of the ball leaving Will Saxon with the simplest of tasks of tucking the ball into an empty net.
The second half was dominated by the hosts, Jack Hart striking the base of the post early on. And the hosts took the lead midway through the second half with a goal of high quality. A long diagonal ball was excellently brought under control by Vladermar Schousboe who turned, beat a defender and fired low past the visiting keeper.
With less than ten minutes to go Alsager were reduced to ten men when substitute William Aldred was sent to the sin bin. This was a massive set back as they were trying to get back into the game and two minutes from time the game was ended as a contest when Sandbach won a penalty for a trip in the box. Daniel Bartle saw his penalty down the middle saved but Bartle was quick to react and fire home the rebound.
Four goals, two penalties and a sin bin to start the groundhop in a game which was a great advert for non-league football. The win sees Sandbach climb three places and leaves Alsager two points from the relegation zone.
