Three of our clubs have joined a national campaign aimed at making sanitary care products available free to women who attend football matches.
West Didsbury & Chorlton, City of Liverpool and AFC Liverpool are all backing the On The Ball initiative, which was set up by three Celtic fans - Orlaith Duffy, Erin Slaven and Mikaela McKinley – the aim being to get every football club in the UK to offer free sanitary products at their grounds.
The three women successfully campaigned for free sanitary product provision at Celtic, and with other professional clubs such as Tranmere Rovers, Kilmarnock, and Barnsley also signed up, our three clubs are now also on board.
West Didsbury & Chorlton’s Matthew Britton said: “As of our opening game of the season against Northwich Victoria, Brookburn Road now provides complimentary sanitary products in the female toilets, that are free to anyone who requires them.
“This is something we intend to continue, and the implementation of this initiative at West was spearheaded by our own Celtic-leaning supporter Barca Jim – and it is something that we were more than happy to be involved with”.
City of Liverpool Director Cathy Long said she was keen to get the Purps signed up as soon as she heard about the scheme.
“We saw the On The Ball campaign and thought that it immediately made sense for us to do it", she said.
“We love seeing fans take the initiative and we are happy to follow their lead. It’s an important issue and one the whole board supports”.
AFC Liverpool’s Josh Spinks added: “The list of Clubs backing the campaign continues to grow and everyone at AFC Liverpool is delighted to get involved to do their bit in ending period poverty.
“We will begin offering free sanitary products for female supporters from our next home game against St Helens Town next weekend.
“The Club will be responsible for stocking and maintaining supplies, so if you see them running low, let us know!”
