Buildbase FA Vase Quarter Final Draw
Mon 5th February 2018 | FA Challenge Vase | By Martin Fallon
1874 Northwich will be on the road in the last eight of the Buildbase FA Vase when they travel to Wolverhampton Sporting Community or Leighton Town.
Saturday's 89th minute victory put 1874 into the Quarter Finals of the competition for the first time in their history, with the draw for the last eight made LIVE on TalkSport2 this lunchtime.
1874 Northwich's tie was the last out of the bag, and they drew the winners of the only tie that is still to be decided. Wolverhampton Sporting Community v Leighton Town was postponed on Saturday due to a waterlogged pitch, and they will try again this coming Saturday with the winners joining the other seven in the next round, just three games away from an appearance at Wembley in May.
Opponents In Profile
Wolverhampton Sporting Community play in the West Midlands (Regional) League which sits at Step 6 in the Non-League Pyramid, the same as our First Division. They are the only Step 6 side still left in the competition. They are third in their league, but like 1874 Northwich have plenty of games in hand on teams above them due to their success in knockout competitions this year. They are ten points off leaders Malvern Town, but with seven games in hand.
They started off in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Vase this year, and have progressed through six ties to reach this stage, including a replay win over Rugby in the Second Round. This is their best ever FA Vase run with six previous campaigns under their belt, their previous best being only as far as the First Round Proper, that coming last season.
Leighton Town play in the Spartan South Midlands league, the same level as 1874 Northwich, and they currently sit third in the league. They are four points behind leaders Welwyn Garden City having played two league games more.
Leighton have a long FA Vase pedigree having first entered in the first ever season of the competition in 1974-75. Their best ever previous run was reaching the Last 16 in 2003-04, that season also seeing them promoted higher up the pyramid to the Southern League where they remained until two seasons ago.
Draw Reaction
We spoke to Wayne Goodison, one half of the 1874 Northwich Management team, after the draw to get his reaction.
He said "We don't know too much about either team at this stage apart from the usual looking at league tables and seeing how they are doing so far this season. No matter who we were drawn against it was going to be a difficult tie, because you get to the latter stages of any knockout competition, especially a National one, then you are more than likely going to be facing very good sides.
"Having an away tie was overdue I guess because we have been drawn at home for quite a number of rounds now, and I think it was Irlam in the First Round Proper when we last had an away game in the Vase. Having said that neither are too far I guess compared to some of the sides that we could have got, and I am sure that we will take a good number of supporters with us whether its Wolverhampton or Leighton.
"I guess one advantage of the draw is that it allows us to go along to the rearranged game next week and take a good look at both teams in one go. We know that they will both try to put out their strongest teams next Saturday whereas they may not for any league games we watch, and we will know all about whoever it is by the time the tie comes around."
