Weekend round up - w/e Saturday 21st October 2017

It was yet another weekend of crucial results, goals and drama as four of our sides secured their place in the Buildbase FA Vase Second Round, and there was lots of entertainment in the remaining Premier Division and First Division games.
Beginning with the teams who progressed in the Buildbase FA Vase, and one of the stand out wins saw First Division Alsager Town triumph 5-2 over Premier Division leaders Runcorn Town – the Bullets’ second victory against their opponents in the space of four days after knocking them out of the Macron Cup on penalties on Wednesday.
Goals from Dave Harry, Jordan Erdman, Michael Lennon, Ryan Goodwin and Jordan Cobley meant that only 90 minutes were required on this occasion. Kevin Exell and Paul McManus gave the visitors some hope at 2-1 and 4-2 respectively, but it wasn’t enough.
The biggest win of the afternoon went to City of Liverpool, who overcame Dronfield Town 7-0. John McGrath, Matthew Williams and John Connolly had the hosts well on their way by half-time, before Thomas Peterson and Connolly struck in the second half and some gloss was added to the scoreline with two efforts from Elliott Nevitt.
1874 Northwich’s cup exploits this season show no signs of letting up as they won 4-1 at fellow Premier Division outfit Irlam. A double from Taylor Kennerley and one from Scott McGowan had the away team in control, and although Gareth Mooney pulled one back early after the restart, Jake Parker went on to restore the three-goal advantage for 1874.
Bootle also moved into the next round after a thrilling 4-3 victory at Rossington Main. A Ryan Cox double had the Bucks in control, but Declan Howe and James Bytheway struck to take the game into extra-time.
Frederick Champion put Bootle 3-2 up, but back came Rossington as Bradley Billafi levelled the tie once again. And so it was left to Michael Ordish to pop up in the 120th minute of the match to send the Merseysiders through.
There may well have been a fifth side who made sure of their Second Round spot, but Ashton Athletic saw their game at home to Liversedge abandoned with the Yellows 3-0 up.
Runcorn Linnets earned another chance to get past Team Northumbria, Mark Houghton making it 1-1 with 13 minutes remaining to ensure that the sides will meet again at the Millbank Linnets Stadium.
However, a further five Hallmark Security League clubs will have to wait until next year to fulfil the dream of a Wembley final.
Charnock Richard also travelled to a team from the Northern League, but the game’s solitary goal from Paul Wardle saw them knocked out at the expense of Bedlington Terriers.
And Burscough were another side left faced with a particularly long trip back from the North-East as they went down 2-1 at Dunston UTS. Terry Cummings’ first-half goal put the visitors in front, but Liam Thear struck at the start and the end of the second half to send Dave Sutton’s team home disappointed.
Dan Cope’s penalty couldn’t prevent Hanley Town from losing 3-1 to Eastern Counties Premier Division side Godmanchester Rovers at Potteries Park, whilst Litherland REMYCA went out by the same scoreline away at Northern Counties East League Premier Division leaders Pontefract Collieries.
Joel Douglas gave the away side some consolation, but a brace from Eli Hey separated by a goal from Vaughan Redford saw the hosts progress.
In the battle of the ‘Wests’ in South Manchester, West Didsbury & Chorlton were defeated by three second half goals from Nathan Fisher, Denver Morris and Amar Purewell for West Auckland Celtic.
AFC Darwen will have to try again with Marske United on Wednesday after that fixture was postponed.
Onto the league action, and Winsford United missed the chance to move up to 4th in the Premier Division as they were held to a 2-2 draw by 21st placed Squires Gate. Robbie Hatton had Winsford in front, but Mark Buchan and Jack Williams scored just before half-time to send Gate into the interval in the lead.
However, they were to be denied three points in manager Andy Clarkson’s first game back in charge as Justin Pickering converted a second-half penalty for the hosts.
Padiham are now 8th in the standings after winning 3-1 at AFC Liverpool. All the goals came after the restart, as Ben Hoskin put the Storks in front on the hour, only for Daniel Boden to hit back for the Reds. But two Jake Hargreaves finishes in the last eight minutes sent the points back to Lancashire.
Widnes’ biggest victory of the season moved them up to 9th as they saw off Maine Road 5-1. Jay Roberts opened the scoring, and two from Sam Sheen and one from Sean Myler had the home team four to the good at the break.
Connor Hughes grabbed a goal for the visitors, but Chad Whyte rounded off the afternoon for Widnes late on.
The final Premier Division game to take place saw Northwich Victoria continue their resurgence under Steve Wilkes as they beat Congleton Town 3-2.
Brian Matthews, Samuel Fitton and Rory Gorman had Vics in cruise control, and although Steve Foster and Thomas Morris made it a nervous finale, they were able to hold on and climb to 15th.
The First Division saw Silsden require a last-gasp winner over Carlisle City to continue their 100% record. Kyle Hancock got the Cobbydalers off to the perfect start, but City hit back through Ryan Errinton and Thomas Lucock.
It left Silsden requiring the goals of Nicholas McNally and Joe Gaughan late on to keep them eight points clear at the summit.
Their nearest challengers are Prestwich Heys, who continued their fine form with an excellent win at 5th placed Whitchurch Alport. Daniel White struck in the 64th minute to propel Heys to victory in this one.
With Litherland REMYCA and Alsager Town away from league action this weekend, 6th placed Sandbach United failed to close the gap on the sides above them as two goals from Louis Downs saw them lose at Eccleshall. Ryan Brooke had equalised for United but that couldn’t stop a 2-1 reverse.
Cammell Laird 1907 are now only behind them on goal difference after they won in injury-time for the second time this week. Josh Maldon put them ahead against 10th placed Abbey Hulton United, but Jonathan Birks’ 90th minute goal looked to have earned the visitors a point.
However, there was still time for Adam Rooney to head home at the death and move his side up two places to 7th.
That was because Stockport Town in 8th drew 1-1 at home to St Helens Town, Conor Downes cancelling out Shaun Brady’s early opener for the visitors, and AFC Blackpool dropped down to 9th after Atherton LR returned from the Mechanics Ground with a 6-1 victory.
A Gary Grier hat-trick, a brace from Theodore Kidd and a goal from Ashley Woodhead did the damage before Samuel Staunton-Turner pulled one back.
Chadderton ascended to 13th after seeing off second-bottom Nelson 4-2. Alberto Seidi and a David Patrick spot-kick twice had the visiting Admirals in front, but two goals apiece from Ryan Shenton and Matthew Buckley saw the home team come out on top.
And finally for this weekend, FC Oswestry Town continued their recent revival with a 5-0 home win against bottom side Daisy Hill. It was goalless at the interval, but Joe Newton, Gary Meradith, Lewis Jarman, Jack Harris and Kevin Garland all struck to give Oswestry their third straight victory.
Despite the gloomy prospect of Storm Brian, our teams were still able to produce plenty of good quality football in a weekend which portrayed ‘the agony and the ecstasy’!
