Mersey Gateway Opens

Last Saturday, the £600m Mersey Gateway bridge opened to traffic for the first time, providing a second crossing over the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes.

Whilst we do not often cover bridge openings on the league website, we felt it important that we highlight the impact that this may have on players, committee members and supporters of many of our teams who may cross this on their way to or from games.

The bridge is the first major river crossing in the North West to be a tolled bridge. This may not be immediately obvious to many people as unlike the M6 Toll, there are no toll booths on it, with crossings instead logged by Automatic Number Plate Recognition.

In addition to the opening of the new bridge, the current Silver Jubilee Bridge that crosses the river has also closed for up to 12 months for much needed refurbishment. This will also be tolled when it reopens to traffic next year.

Cars are charged £2.00 per journey, with minibuses £6.00 and full coaches £8.00. Merseyflow, the operators of the bridge, offer a 10% discount on each journey if you register with them beforehand.

If you are using the bridge, it is important to note that you have until midnight the day after your journey to pay your toll. If you do not pay you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice.  Payment can be made in a number of ways:
