Big six for Burscough

Since dropping back down into our League back in the summer, results have been a bit mixed for Burscough as they adjust to the different demands of our Premier Division.

Their only victory before Saturday was, in fact, a 3-0 win over AFC Emley in the FA Cup on the opening day of the season, but they certainly hit form at the weekend with a fine 6-0 win over Armthorpe Welfare in the FA Vase.

The challenge now for Dave Sutton’s men is transfer the form shown in FA competitions into their forthcoming league games.

Oswestry off and running

A mixture of satisfaction and relief was no doubt the mood in the FC Oswestry Town dressing room on Saturday, after the 2-1 win at Cheadle Town.

Having lost every game so far this season before the weekend victory, the pressure was mounting to collect some points, and now the long awaited first win has been posted, the Shropshiremen can now look to build on the positives from Saturday.

Rakesmoor becoming a fortress for the Old Boys

A team that have shown rather inconsistent form since the start of the season are Holker Old Boys, but it is certainly becoming apparent that their home ground at Rakesmoor Lane is an increasingly tough place to visit.

Saturday’s 1-0 win over Daisy Hill was the Stags’ third successive home win, conceding only one goal in the process, so although away form needs to improve, recent results on home soil suggest that a trip along the A590 to the outskirts of Barrow will be a tough gig for First Division sides this season.

Good start for Abbey Hulton

When a team steps up to join our league, there’s always interest in seeing how they adjust to playing at a higher level, and it certainly looks like Abbey Hulton United have found their feet in Division One since the start of the season.

Since the opening day win over Daisy Hill, Abbey have lost just one game, but they are fast becoming draw specialists, with Saturday’s point at Eccleshall being their fourth in the last six games, and since the start of the season they have drawn five of the nine games played so far.

It’s a run of form that has none the less propelled United to within a couple of points of the play offs, and if they find the secret of turning draws into victories, a promotion play off place will be a realistic target.

LR stop the rot

One team who will have particularly enjoyed their victory on Saturday are Atherton LR, who ended a run of four successive defeats with a fine 4-1 win at New Mills on Saturday.

At the end of August, LR looked to be getting in the groove with two successive wins, but since then it’s been a bit gloomy until the improvement in fortunes at the weekend.

With the winning feeling and the goalscoring habits returned, Shaun Lynch’s men are well set up for their busy schedule of games in the coming weeks.
