FA Cup Third Qualifying Round
Mon 18th September 2017 | FA Challenge Cup | By Martin Fallon
The draw has been made at Wembley for the Third Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup with our two remaining sides both receiving home draws against opposition from higher leagues. The draw is as follows:
1874 Northwich v Ossett Town
Ashton Athletic v Chorley
We take a quick look below at both of these ties, which will be played on the weekend of Saturday 30th September 2017.
1874 Northwich v Ossett Town
This will be a first ever meeting between these two sides, with 1874 Northwich playing in the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in their history.
Wins over Northwich Victoria, West Didsbury & Chorlton, Mossley and North Ferriby United have seen them get to this stage. This progression has affected their league campaign substantially, and they have played just three league games, however they are yet to taste defeat this season and are in great form.
Ossett Town are 12th in Evostik North, winning four of their six league games, all of which have curiously come on the road. They are on a five game winning run, and in the FA Cup so far they have beaten Sheffield, Consett and Atherton Collieries.
Ossett have twice faced our sides in the Cup in recent years. In 2014 they won 5-1 at Stockport Sports in the Preliminary Round, and the following year they lost 1-0 at AFC Blackpool at the same stage.
Ashton Athletic v Chorley
Like 1874 Northwich, Ashton Athletic will be playing in the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in their history, but it is against opponents that will be familiar to them. They have faced each other a number of times over the years in the Lancashire Trophy, most recently in last years Semi Final which saw Ashton win on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Wins over Squires Gate, Runcorn Linnets, Bamber Bridge and Albion Sports have seen them get to this stage, and they have scored four goals in three of those previous wins. Like 1874 Northwich, their league campaign has suffered with this Cup run, but they have lost just once in the 2017/18 season, that coming in their opening league game.
Chorley sit 12th in National League North, winning four and losing four of their eleven league games so far. They have lost just one of their last seven games in all competitions, and reached this stage with a 3-1 away win at Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday.
Chorley are regular opponents against our sides, facing our teams in seven of the last eight seasons in the Lancashire Trophy. In the FA Cup, we have to go back to September 2014 to find the last meeting, that being a 1-0 win over Glossop North End.
