1874 Northwich booked their place in the Emirates FA Cup Third Qualifying Round with a tremendous 1-0 win over North Ferriby United of the National League North.

The decisive goal arrived midway through the second half of a tense game at the St Luke's Barton Stadium, and was credited as an own goal, but no one in the home camp will be bothering too much about that on a memorable afternoon for everyone at the club.

North Ferriby United came into the game on the back of a 6-0 home league defeat in midweek, the latest result in a poor run of form that has seen them fall to the bottom of the league table, and the Greens took full advantage to edge out opponents from three leagues above.

The Greens can now look forward to a tie in the next round, the first time they have reached this stage of the competition.

1874 joint manager Paul Bowyer was understandably a happy man afterwards.

"It's a day for everyone involved at the club, on and off the field it's a day for everybody.

"We had obviously been in good form, and in the last round we beat Mossley who are a league higher, but we knew we were in for a big test.

"I'm made up that we didn't let the occasion get to us, as sometimes that happens when you are facing a team from a couple of leagues higher, and it didn't today, and we were really, really good.

"Whether we won or not, we said beforehand we had to be sure we played as well as we possibly can, and we have done that, and we deserved the victory and a place in the next round.

"I thought we dominated a lot of the game, and although at times we didn't play as well as we can do, their keeper pulled off two great saves in the first half, really top saves.

"We said to the lads at half time to keep believing, and keep going. We set about it as we normally do, play football in the right areas and hurt them.

"We have a mixture of experience and some young lads playing at this level at this level for the first time, and it is really positive to be able to say to them now they have been part of us getting this victory today.

"The supporters have brilliant all season, and the support we have had on our travels in the last couple of rounds, and today was another one of those days.

"The supporters I've spoken are absolutely delighted at seeing us progress and get through today's game. The fact that we have done it in such a positive and convincing way is brilliant".

The manager's thoughts were echoed by 1874 Northwich Chairman Paul Stockton.

"We are all absolutely delighted. The whole team gave their all, and I think we were unlucky not to get two or three goals.

"Their goalkeeper was the man of the match for them, which to me says it all, and our defence coped with everything they could throw at us.

"We didn't give them a chance, we played out of our skins, and to beat a team three leagues higher is just reward for the players.

"I'm delighted for the team, the management team of Paul and Goody, and the supporters and these occasions are what football is all about.

"This will go down in the history of 1874 as one of those memorable days, same as when beat Bishop Auckland away in the Vase two years ago, beat Witton Albion in the final of the Mid-Cheshire Cup, and beat Mossley at home in the last round. It was the same as that.

"The supporters have their reward again today for the faith they put in us in organising a new football club, it is only our fifth season on the road to what we hope to achieve.

"I would also like to congratulate Ashton Athletic, I am delighted for the League that we have now got two teams in the Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, which is fantastic news for the League".
