This weekend’s Hallmark Security League action delivered entertainment aplenty, with goals, late drama and some crucial results even at this early stage of the campaign.
In the Premier Division, leaders Runcorn Town continued their perfect start to the season after winning 4-2 in what looked a tricky trip to West Didsbury & Chorlton. Mark Reed opened the scoring for the early pace-setters, and although Nic Evangelinos levelled for West, goals either side of half-time from Craig Cairns and Simon Thelwell put Town in control. Joe Shaw halved the deficit, but an own goal made sure of the points for the visitors.
And the Runcorn dominance at the top of the early league tables continued as Linnets remained 2nd courtesy of a 3-0 home win against Maine Road, goals coming from Stuart Wellstead, Aaron Morris and Paul Shanley.
Bootle climbed to 3rd after a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Northwich Victoria. Vics’ Brian Matthews cancelled out Daniel Murphy’s opener, but second-half goals from Steven Jones and Ben Hodkinson were enough, despite Olly Walker striking for the hosts with 17 minutes to go.
Winsford United continued their solid start, moving up to 4th after they saw off AFC Darwen by two goals to nil. An early Callum Gardner penalty set them on the way, and James Rothwell sealed the win on the hour.
City of Liverpool are now 5th after beating second-bottom Barnton 4-2, but they received a scare along the way. James McShane and Jack Woolley appeared to have the visitors on course for a first league win of the season, but Jamie McDonald and Luke Denson made it level pegging at the interval. Karl Noon put the hosts into the lead early in the second half, and John McGrath added a fourth late on.
An entertaining 3-3 draw at Abbey Hey extended 7th placed AFC Liverpool’s unbeaten run to six matches. George Lomax put Chris Stammers’ side a goal ahead, but Daniel McLoughlin, Nathan Edwards and Andy Smith turned the game around for the home team. However, AFC were not to be denied their share of the points thanks to Kevin Edgar and an own goal.
On Friday night, Widnes came from behind to triumph at bottom side Squires Gate, Chris Lomax and Thomas Mitchell grabbing the goals after Dean Ing had put the hosts ahead.
The two other Premier Division fixtures this weekend ended all square: Liam Morrison struck in the last minute for Irlam to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to Barnoldswick Town, who led through Mark Threlfall. The teams are now 11th and 13th respectively.
And Burscough also left it late to equalise against visiting Congleton Town, Will Threlkeld intervening after Declan Fletcher and Jason Carey appeared to have given the Bears maximum points. Terry Cummings had given the home team a half-time lead.
There was no shortage of goals in the First Division either, as was evident at the Cobbydale Construction Stadium, where Silsden continued their 100% start to the season by defeating Cheadle Town 5-2. Jake Ambrose and Liam Delaney twice put the away side in front, but they were pegged back on both occasions by Joe Gaughan and Niall Sultan. Danny Forrest’s men required three goals in the last ten minutes to come out on top in this one, Gaughan scoring twice to wrap up his hat-trick and Nicky McNally adding his name to the scoresheet.
In an important clash at Litherland Sports Park, it was Litherland REMYCA who leapfrogged their opponents Whitchurch Alport into 2nd place. Sam Dodd’s first-half header was enough for a 1-0 victory.
Alsager Town also moved above Alport, climbing to 3rd after an emphatic 7-1 win at Daisy Hill. There was a hat-trick for Oliver Jepson, and two for both Jordan Erdman and Michael Lennon to help the Bullets along the way. Adam Owens briefly gave the hosts a glimmer of hope by making it 3-1, but they remain in 17th place.
Alsager weren’t the only side to claim a 7-1 scalp on Saturday: 5th placed Sandbach United overcame Bacup Borough by the same scoreline. James Kirby scored three times for his side in that game, but only after an early brace for Ryan Eislet put Sandbach in control. There was also a two-goal salvo for Boris Melingui, whilst Tre Baldwin-Willis got a late consolation for Bacup.
Prestwich Heys moved back into the top six after a 5-3 victory at Eccleshall, who remain 18th. Three goals in quick succession for Max White, Alfie Butcher and Lee Bruce gave Heys a dream start, and Belcher struck again just before half-time after Elliot Booth had responded for the hosts. Bruce made it 5-1 to the visitors, but Paul Snape’s team showed good fighting spirit, though goals for Louis Downs and Jack Warren weren’t enough.
New Mills are now on the cusp of the play-offs after they continued their unbeaten home record against AFC Blackpool. Darcy O’Connor and Dennis Sherriff had the Millers two goals ahead, but Kit Gregory pulled one back on the half-hour. Ultimately, second-half goals from Nathan Neequaye and George Blackwell saw Calum Sykes’ side claim a 4-1 win.
Behind them on goal difference are Stockport Town, who won 4-0 at Nelson courtesy of strikes from Darryl Grant, Ashley Stott, Aaron Dwyer and Jamie Hinchliffe. The Admirals slip to second-bottom.
Abbey Hulton United and Carlisle City both occupy top-half positions after sharing the spoils at New Birches Road. Kyle Armstrong’s penalty shortly after half-time put City into the lead, but that was quickly cancelled out by Joshua Tune.
Cammell Laird 1907 moved up to 13th after a 5-1 home triumph over Holker Old Boys. A Josh Maldon penalty and a Charlie MacInnes header put them in the driving seat, before a hat-trick for Joe Malkin put the game beyond doubt. To their credit, Holker battled to the end and Callum Baynes grabbed a goal for his side midway through the second half.
Last but certainly not least, a gripping game at Crilly Park saw Atherton LR beaten 3-2 by Chadderton. Leon Iluobe and Michael Moss put the visitors two to the good, but LR responded through Theodore Kidd and Alex Guest. That appeared to be enough for a point until Luke Heron struck in the last minute for Chadderton.
So yet another weekend where supporters across the North West got great value for money!
