More cup glory for the Yellows
What is it about Ashton Athletic and cup ties? Once again the Yellows delivered under pressure when facing opponents from a higher league, in defeating Evo-Stik League side Bamber Bridge 2-1 in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday.
Victories over Radcliffe Borough and Chorley on the way to lifting the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, and a 7-2 thumping of Mossley in the FA Cup at the same stage last season are still fresh in the mind, so in many ways another memorable cup occasion was no surprise.
Once again it looks like the Yellows cup fighting qualities are once again well and truly ready for action.
Tremendous comeback from Abbey Hey
When it comes to remarkable comebacks, the weekend award has to go to Abbey Hey for the way in which they turned adversity into near dramatic triumph, in their FA Cup at home to Altrincham on Saturday.
The visitors of course have some considerable cup fighting pedigree of their own, and when they cruised into a three goal lead after 24 minutes having passed up other good chances in the meantime, supreme optimism was required in the home camp.
But two goals just before half time pulled Abbey back into the game, and with five minutes left a penalty from Sam Freakes completed an amazing recovery. Indeed, Abbey could even have won it with a chance in the last minute.
The replay will be a different story, but if Abbey display the same fighting qualities throughout the season, they will be a force to be reckoned with.
Town in good goalscoring form
A team whose shooting boots are well polished at the moment are Stockport Town, who continued their recent good form with a 5-1 win at FC Oswestry Town on Saturday.
That's now 11 goals in three games for Dave Wild's men, and there has been no shortage of entertainment in those games either, with the games containing a total of 17 goals.
With those stats, it sounds like Town are a good watch at the moment.
Away days working well for Cheadle Town
One club enjoying away days at the moment are Cheadle Town, whose 3-1 win at Sandbach United on Saturday maintained their 100% away record, having scored eight times in their three games.
The challenge now for manager Antony Trucca is to ensure his side can deliver the same sort of form at home, as so far, games at Park Road have yet to deliver a win.
Seven up for New Mills
The last few seasons have not been the happiest for New Mills, with two successive relegations meaning that the club has had to regroup in Division One this season.
However, there are signs that the downward spiral has halted and with just one league defeat so far, Calum Sykes's men recorded the club's biggest win for some time on Saturday when they beat Holker Old Boys 7-2 at Church Lane.
The last time the Milers scored more than seven in a league game was back on 12th March 2011, when they beat St Helens Town 9-0 on their way to clinching the Premier Division title, and everyone at Church Lane will be hoping that Saturday's result is the latest sign that better times are ahead.
