The weekend saw the first competitive fixtures of the season for 29 of our 44 clubs, as they opened the campaign with ties in the Emirates F.A Cup Extra Preliminary Round.
There were eight all-Hallmark Security League ties, and the fixtures programme opened with a game that was streamed live on the BBC Sport website, with Litherland REMYCA winning 2-0 at home to AFC Liverpool in a game that kicked off at lunchtime.
After a goalless first half, Colin McDonald and Lennon Whewell struck in the second half to secure victory for Remy in front of a good crowd of 312.
One of the more eye catching games took place at Barnton's Townfield ground, with Northwich Victoria hosting 1874 Northwich at their new home this season in a game that ended in a 2-2 draw.
Two goals from Scott McGowan had the visitors two ahead by the hour mark, but Vics hit back with goals from Brian Matthews and Jordan Conley to earn a replay that will take place on Tuesday with a 7.45pm kick off at the St Luke’s Barton Stadium.
Former 1874 Northwich manager Ian Street was in the dugout in charge of Congleton Town for the first time in a competitive fixture, and his new charges got off to a winning start with a 4-2 triumph over New Mills.
All the goals came in the second half, with Declan Fletcher grabbing a double for the Bears.
Ashton Athletic hit the ground running with a 4-0 win at Squires Gate, with Joel Brownhill earning the headlines with an opening day hat trick, with Jamie Harrison contributing the other goal.
An 89th minute winner from Adam Ferrand clinched a 2-1 victory for Abbey Hey at Irlam, and City of Liverpool won by the same score up at Padiham.
Jamie McDonald gave the Purples an early lead that was cancelled out by a Jay Hart penalty nine minutes before the break, but Tom Peterson struck 11 minutes from time to clinch victory for the visitors in their first ever FA Cup tie.
One of the league’s most prolific scorers last season, Craig Cairns of Runcorn Town, picked up from where he left off with a hat trick in his side’s 3-2 over AFC Darwen, although the winning goal only arrived in the 90th minute from the penalty spot.
Maine Road won by the same score at home to Winsford United, and coincidentally the Road winner was also a last minute strike, with Owen Pollitt the last gasp goal hero for the Sky Blues.
In the ties involving our clubs facing opposition from other leagues, West Didsbury & Chorlton made an impressive start to their season with a 5-0 win at Athersley Recreation of the Northern Counties East League, in which Tom Bailey scored twice on his debut for West.
Goals in each half from Kyle Hamid and Michael Simpson saw Runcorn Linnets through to a 2-0 Hemsworth Miners Welfare, and Chris Malkin scored twice in Cammell Laird 1907’s 4-1 home win over Maltby Main.
After conceding early on, goals from Mark Threlfall, Jake Lloyd and Daniel Boyle earned Barnoldswick Town a 3-1 win over Jarrow Roofing BCA, and Hanley Town’s Dan Cope was man of the match in the 4-1 home win over Atherstone Town, collecting a hat trick.
However, not all of our sides were successful against opponents from other leagues, and it was a disappointing day in particular for Charnock Richard, who were two goals up after 33 minutes but eventually lost 4-3 to Penistone Church at Mossie Park in their first ever FA Cup tie.
There was no winning FA Cup debut either for Whitchurch Alport, who lost 3-1 at Walsall Wood, and although Jack Woolley struck twice for Barnton at Parkgate, the Villagers eventually lost 4-2.
Nelson's history in the FA Cup stretches back to 1896/97, but they fell at the first hurdle this season, going down 2-0 at Albion Sports, and there was no joy for Alsager Town at Pontefract Collieries, with the Bullets going down 1-0.
There was mixed fortunes for our sides in Sunday's FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round ties. Burscough were comfortable 3-0 winners at AFC Emley, with Peter Henerty giving them a 5th minute lead. Derek Szanto added a second on 19 minutes before Jake Connolly added the third just five minutes from time.
However in our other two games, Bootle fell to a 0-3 defeat at Northern Counties East League side, Hallam FC, while Widnes suffered a 0-5 defeat at home to Handsworth Parramore, also of the NCEL.
Only one FA Cup tie remains outstanding, with Tuesday's replay between 1874 Northwich and local rivals Northwich Victoria, before the new League season kicks off on Saturday.
