City of Liverpool hosted a Charity Fundraising Bucket Collection on behalf of the Owen McVeigh Foundation at their First Division Play-Off Semi Final against Whitchurch Alport.

The Foundation was set up in memory of Owen McVeigh who sadly passed away from leukaemia at the age of 11 years old. The purpose of the charity is to raise funds to help and enrich the lives of children who are ill with cancer, and they work closely with Alder Hey Children's Hospital in seeking to provide children with a special occasion to look forward to.

Mark McVeigh, who set up the foundation, liaised with The Purps Chairman Paul Manning and Executive Director Gary Johansen in preparation for the event.

Gary stated that the club were delighted to be able to help set up such a worthwhile Charity event, and that once again, the fans were fantastic in supporting the fundraiser.

"It was a great occasion, and we also had a number of children as mascots wearing Owen McVeigh Foundation T-shirts, including Whitchurch Alport mascot Zac Harris" .

Gary added "We would also like to thank our friends at Whitchurch Alport, who heard that we would be fundraising for the Owen McVeigh Foundation today, and they made a substantial donation to the collection. It was such a wonderful gesture from a brilliantly run club".

Mark McVeigh added: "The Owen McVeigh Foundation would like to thank all the owners staff, players and supporters for allowing us to collect funds for the foundation today at this big game . From the moment we got there everyone at the club made us feel so welcome, and it was great to be part of a brilliant day.

"I'd also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone at Whitchurch Alport who were fantastic and made a donation of £130 as soon as they got off the bus. The professional attention to detail today was a real eye opener, yet all conducted with a great relaxed spirit. We can't thank you all enough and we've all had such a great experience here today".

Gary and Mark also expressed their thanks to Purps fan Sam Fairchild. Sam had won a signed framed City of Liverpool home shirt in a club raffle, yet decided to donate it to the Owen McVeigh Foundation, in order it may be raffled again to raise further funds for their charity.

Gary said:  "This just epitomises the sense of community our fans have, and it was a tremendous gesture on behalf of Sam".

In total, the funds raised for the Foundation on the day came to a brilliant £446, plus the generous donation from Whitchurch Alport, giving a total donated of £576.
