A great week for the Yellows

Ashton Athletic rounded off a memorable week in the club’s history with a 2-1 win at Irlam on Saturday.

While collecting three points was no doubt an enjoyable experience for everyone in the visitors’ camp, it did rather pale into insignificance in comparison to events on Tuesday evening, when the Yellows became the first NWCFL team since Great Harwood Town in 1992 to lift the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy.

Goals from Danny Smith and a cracking last minute winner from Lee Vaughan earned Athletic a 2-1 win over Radcliffe Borough, and afterwards Chairman Jimmy Whyte described the win as the greatest night in the club’s history.

The club represented the League superbly throughout the competition but especially on Tuesday night – congratulations to everyone involved.

Colls bounce back

Atherton Collieries began the week at the top of the Premier Division, but the pressure was on to maintain that position after losing at home to second placed Runcorn Linnets at home.

Tricky away games at Barnoldswick Town and AFC Liverpool were always going to be a test, but Colls met the challenges with flying colours, emerging with 2-1 wins from both games, and coming from behind in the game on Merseyside on Friday evening.

There are still plenty of points to play for, but Colls are showing no signs of weakness, which is bad news for all their promotion rivals.

Linnets keep up the pressure

Colls may be top of the Premier Division, but there’s no doubting the durability of Runcorn Linnets’ promotion challenge as they continued their impressive winning run with 3-0 victory at AFC Darwen on Saturday.

That’s now seven straight wins for Linnets, and eight wins in their last nine games – impressive end of season form to say the least.

They may have played more games than their promotion rivals around them, but there seems little doubt they will stay in the hunt for top spot if they keep up this form.

Widnes winning machine keeps going

It was a good week for Widnes, who kept up their promotion campaign in fine style with three wins in five days, rounding off with an 8-0 win over St Helens Town at the Select Security Stadium.

That impressive victory was their eighth successive league win, and moved them into fourth place in Division One, just two points off the top of the table.

It’s been a storming run by Joey Dunn’s men, and they appear to be building up an unstoppable head of steam as the season comes to its climax.

More great Chaddy away days

On these pages over the past few months, we have made mention of some of Chadderton’s away performances this season, with a 6-3 win at Holker Old Boys, a 7-1 win at Eccleshall and a 5-3 win at St Helens Town catching the eye.

Well, once again Mark Howard’s men made themselves unwelcome guests with more impressive performances on the road in the past week.

Winning 2-0 at City of Liverpool in the Macron Challenge Cup semi-final was impressive, given the Purples’ recent defensive record of only having conceded two goals in their eleven games before meeting Chaddy on Thursday, and the Reds followed that up with a thrilling 5-4 win over FC Oswestry Town at the Venue on Saturday.

We await with interest Chaddy’s remaining away trips to Carlisle City, Atherton LR and Ashton Town – they could be worth pencilling in the diary.
