Liverpool Senior Cup Semi-Final - Southport 3 Litherland REMYCA 2
Wed 29th March 2017 | County Cup Competitions | By David Brindle
Phil Stafford's Litherland REMYCA were beaten by Southport 3-2 despite a valiant effort from the Hallmark Security League First Division leaders.
An 82nd minute goal from Ben McKenna proved to be the deciding goal in the game when the winger struck a left footed half-volley past Sean Lake at the near post.
After a scrappy first half with lots of sloppy passes from both sides, REMYCA capitalised when Alex Ryan stole possession from a Southport goal kick.
Keeping it alive between himself and Lennon Whewell at the byline, he managed to find Michael Boyle just outside the six yard box.
Boyle made no mistake and slotted home the first goal of the game, and the REMY led 1-0 at half time.
Andy Preece's side did respond immediately after they restarted the second half, with Rory McKeown finishing off a rebound from a good Sean Lake save.
Substitute Louis Almond then gave Southport the lead in the 68th minute, but their lead didn't last long.
Alex Ryan scored a long range curling effort to lob the keeper straight from the kick off and level the scores.
At 2-2 the game became tense, both sides trying to find a winner to book their place in the final.
Tempers flared when Almond appeared to stamp on REMYCA captain Stephen King following a robust challenge from the skipper.
After clashing, the Southport substitute then proceeded to clatter into Lee McConchie late.
Southport managed to see the game out after their 82nd minute winner from McKenna, with REMYCA struggling to find a clear chance for an equaliser.
Stafford's men gave an outstanding account of themselves against a team in a much higher league, and pushed Southport close for their victory.
With promotion the sole focus for the REMY, they will hoping to use this as a springboard to push on and seal the deal in the First Division.
Next up for REMYCA is a game at LSP against Silsden on Saturday April 1st.
