Bootle and Litherland REMYCA are both in action in the semi-finals of the Liverpool Senior Cup on Tuesday evening, with Bootle hosting Prescot Cables and Remy travelling to face Southport at Haig Avenue.

For Bootle, it’s a chance to reach the final for the first time since 2014, after a successful campaign a year earlier when they defeated AFC Liverpool 4-3 on penalties in an all-NWCFL final at the Delta Taxi's Stadium.

That triumph put the name of Bootle on the trophy for the first time in 130 years, as they had been the very first winners of the Liverpool Senior Cup back in 1883 but had never won it again until four years ago.

A tie against a team one division above will hold no fears for Joe Doran’s men, having already beaten Evo-Stik League side Marine and Tranmere Rovers from the Vanarama National League on their journey to the semi-final.

Prescot Cables are currently managed by former Daisy Hill and Ashton Town boss Brian Richardson, and his assistant is the former Atherton Collieries manager Steve Pilling, and they will welcome a tasty cup tie as a break from their struggles in the Evo-Stik League Division One North, where they sit uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.

But it’s easy to see why Bootle manager Joe Doran believes his side are more than capable of producing another cup scalp.

“Once you beat teams from a higher level it does give you belief you can do it again,” said Doran. “But really if we are going to win the senior cup then we will need to beat teams from a higher level than us. We’ve already played Marine and beat them and got a great night at Prenton Park where we drew and then thankfully won on penalties.”

The Bucks have enjoyed some memorable nights since they re-entered the competition ten years ago, with Everton, Marine, Tranmere and AFC Liverpool just some of the clubs who have played their part in memorable senior cup nights at the Delta Taxis Stadium and Doran believes Tuesday's encounter can be another tie to add to the list.

He said: “As a club, we’ve enjoyed the Senior Cup ever since we got back into it ten years ago and Tuesday night will hopefully be no exception.

"We’re up against a good Prescot Cables side from the division above, but we always have a good atmosphere under the floodlights in midweek. It’s a semi-final so we just want to go out and get the job done.”

Despite there being a perceived lack of interest in local cup competitions, Doran believes the Liverpool Senior Cup offers his side the perfect opportunity to test themselves against higher opposition. “I think the senior cup is a great competition to be in” the Bucks boss said.

"It gives us the opportunity to play teams we wouldn’t normally play and It's local too. You have us versus Prescot, us versus Marine. It offers the chance for two local sides to come together that wouldn’t normally. Attendances and the atmosphere at games are normally good to. It’s just a good competition to be in.”

Having home advantage against their Evo-Stik north oppnents, the Bucks boss believes the most important thing it that his lads play well and “step up to the plate."

“Obviously, its an advantage to play home, but the lads have to make sure they step up to the plate" insisted Doran. "The main priority is to play well. If you play well then nine times out of ten the result goes for you sometimes it doesn’t, but that’s football.

“But at the end of the day it’s a semi-final, it’s a big game. Any semi-final at this level is tough to get to, but we just want to go out put a good performance in and more importantly enjoy it.”

For Litherland REMYCA, a semi-final presents the opportunity to make history by reaching the final of the competition for the first time in their history, and continue a fantastic run in the competition that saw them beat Everton 1-0 at the Litherland Sports Park in the quarter final, after reaching the semi-final of last season's competition.

A tie away to a team in the Vanarama National League from five leagues above is a tough prospect, but with Southport bottom of the table and Remy riding high at the top of our Division One, there’s no doubt as to who has the better form guide going into the game.

Remy’s win at Atherton LR on Saturday extended a run of form that has seen them lose just twice in 18 games, and manager Phil Stafford insists that his players will go into the tie full of confidence.

"We have got a good record in the Senior Cup with this being our second semi final in as many seasons. I'm really looking forward to the game and I know the lads are", he said.

"This is a game for us to go and enjoy at a great venue. Southport are struggling in the league and it's probably the best time to play them.

"We are massive outsiders so we have got nothing to lose. I just hope our lads give a good account of themselves and the club enjoy the night".
