1874 Northwich are gearing up for a fascinating clash against local rivals Witton Albion in the semi-final of the Mid-Cheshire Cup this Thursday, 16th March.

In last year’s final of the same competition, 1874 enjoyed one of the most memorable nights in their short history when they beat Witton 3-0, and everyone in the Greens’ camp will hoping that lightning will strike in the same place twice.

However, retaining the trophy won’t be easy, as Witton will present formidable oppposition, given they are currently riding high in the Evo-Stik League Division One South, sitting nine points behind leaders Shaw Lane with two games in hand, and Saturday’s win at Spalding was their fifth in succession.

1874 of course lost manager Ian Street at the weekend, with Paul Bowyer and Wayne Goodison now taking over the managerial reins, and Paul believes that an exciting local cup tie is the perfect game for everyone to focus on after the weekend’s events.

“The Witton game is an ideal time for everyone to pull together, and we’re looking forward to testing ourselves against a side who are flying high in the Evo-Stik South and looking good for promotion.

“We've shown that on our day we have the players to match anyone so we won't be heading into the game with fear.

“The message to the players will be make Witton worry about us and we're going to go all out to try and upset the form book and play to our strengths.

“Obviously they'll be big favourites to progress but beating them in last year's final showed everyone that it can be done. We'll certainly be heading into the game with a strong side and we believe we can get the result".

The game at the St Luke’s Barton Stadium kicks off at 7.45 pm, and will be played to a finish on the night.
