Battling against adversity

As Storm Doris swept across the country last week, many were affected by the devastation it left in its wake, and a number of clubs in our league were left counting the cost after Doris did a wrecking job on their facilities.

Padiham were one of the worst affected, with the picture below showing the damage caused after winds blew down the covered standing area on the Allotment side of their ground, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage just a few days before FA Ground Grading officials are due to visit on Tuesday.

They weren't alone though, with Barnton, Ashton Town, Ashton Athletic and Whitchurch Alport among others left counting the cost of damage at their grounds, and on top of that Abbey Hey had to postpone their scheduled fixture against AFC Darwen on Saturday after a break in left the club in no fit state to host a game.

Whether it's an act of God, or mindless vandalism perpetrated by society lowlife, we know our clubs will overcome the challenges that the past few days have put before them, and that willing volunteers will find the means, one way or another, to get the grounds back to the condition they were in before events took control.

Town continue to roll

Once again Stockport Town came up with the goods as they continued their unbeaten run under manager Dave Wild with a 2-1 over Sandbach United on Saturday.

The Lions have now gone eight games unbeaten since Dave took over, and have won five of the last six, which sees them second in the form guide for Division One.

After a run of home games, the Lions now face six successive away games, so it will be interesting to see if the unbeaten run continues when the Town bandwagon takes to the road.

A good day out for Bacup

One of the most welcomed victories of the week at any club will undoubtedly have been Bacup Borough's 1-0 win at Cheadle Town on Saturday.

Brent Peters' side had been on a bad run of form, with nine defeats in their last ten games, and Saturday's win was the first in over three months.

Borough have some tricky fixtures coming up in the next few weeks against some of the promotion contenders, but Saturday's result will give them the boost they needed to face up to some testing games ahead.

Cobbydalers' tough test

Silsden have hit a bit of form at the minute, with their 1-0 win over Chadderton on Friday night being their third win in four games.

Although Danny Forrest's men are in mid-table at the moment, over the next few weeks they have some interesting games that could go some way to deciding events at both ends of the table come the end of the season.

After a trip to relegation-threatened Eccleshall this weekend, the Cobbydalers then face City of Liverpool and Litherland REMYCA at home, followed by away games at Charnock Richard and Whitchurch Alport.

No doubt all of the afore mentioned sides will have taken note of Silsden's recent results.

Theo's back

It won't have gone unnoticed by many that one of the league's most prolific scorers in recent years appeared among the list of League goalscorers for the first time this season on Saturday.

Hanley Town's Theo Stair slammed home a rebound from a penalty kick against AFC Liverpool, his first goal since returning to the club in January.

It was in fact his fourth appearance this season, and although he didn't get on the scoresheet in the previous three games, he certainly made his mark as he was awarded the man of the match award by the opposing team in each of the three games.

There have been some changes at the club in recent weeks, but it sounds very much like it's business as usual as far as Theo is concerned.
