Weekend Round Up - Saturday 28th January 2017

As January comes to a close, it was a weekend of last gasp despair, wash outs and emphatic victories for our sides.

The headline action took place in Lincolnshire, as Atherton Collieries travelled to Cleethorpes Town –the runaway leaders in the Northern Counties East League – for their Buildbase FA Vase 5th Round tie.

Unfortunately, Colls suffered the same fate as Bootle in the last round at the hands of Cleethorpes, the home team grabbing a late winner. It’s been a brilliant effort from Michael Clegg’s men to progress so far into the competition, and first half goals from Mark Battersby and Gareth Peet had them 2-0 up, before Liam Davis pulled one back just before half-time.

Davis levelled things up early after the restart, and from then on the game could have swung either way. It was left to Matty Coleman to break Colls’ hearts in the last minute and book his side a place in the quarter-finals. Colls have done the Hallmark Security League proud in the competition, but attention now turns to their title challenge.

Their direct rivals all had their league games postponed, and in fact all ten matches in the Premier Division fell victim to heavier than expected overnight rain.

There were five First Division clashes that beat the weather to provide some consolation for supporters of the league, as well as one on Friday night.

That saw 2nd placed Litherland REMYCA close the gap on leaders Whitchurch Alport to a solitary point with a 4-0 win at FC Oswestry Town. A faultless first half from Phil Stafford’s team set them on their way, Lennon Whewell, David Flynn and James McGrane all on target; it was McGrane who completed the scoring with 15 minutes to play.

Onto Saturday, and despite four postponements, the net bulged no fewer than 27 times throughout the First
Division.

At Woodland Court, Alsager Town moved up to 4th with an impressive 5-0 victory against Bacup Borough. A double from top scorer Michael Lennon, one from the penalty spot, and a Paul Taylor header had the Bullets in control at half-time. Mark Grice and Taylor Attrell put the icing on the cake after the interval, as Bacup remain 18th.

At the end of an emotional week for Widnes following the sad news of the passing away of Steve Hill, Joey Dunn’s men put on a performance that was a fitting tribute to their former manager.

They overcame AFC Blackpool 7-0 at the Select Security Stadium, a Billy Webb brace separated by a Daniel Hand strike to put them three to the good by half-time. Kevin Towey, Luke J Edwards, Michael Burke and Jack Graham all got on the scoresheet when play resumed, the seven goals leaving Widnes in seventh place as their surge towards the play-off spots continues. AFC Blackpool stay 19th.

The closest match-up of the weekend came at Stockport Sports Village, as Stockport Town climbed up to 9th after getting the better of Silsden by two goals to one. Adam Stubbs gave the home side the lead, but Daniel Illingworth equalised with fifteen to go. However, Town manager Dave Wild was not to be denied his first three points since taking charge, Darryl Grant grabbing the winner three minutes from time.

Chadderton followed up last weekend’s triumph over Whitchurch Alport with a 7-1 vanquishing of second bottom Eccleshall. A hat-trick from Liam Ellis, one of which came from the spot, was the highlight, with Leon Iluobe, Timothy Astley, Samuel Gibson and Christopher Pauley also on target.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who initially cancelled out Ellis’ opener through Nathan Dyer and were well in the game for large periods, with four of the visitors’ goals coming in the final 15 minutes.

Last but by no means least, 14th placed Cheadle Town made it four wins from their last six by beating Daisy Hill 4-0. Luke Hincks, Jack Lever and Rhys Webb gave the hosts a commanding lead at the break, and Justin Pickering wrapped up a handsome victory eleven minutes into the second half.

League action returns next Saturday, so let’s hope that the weather is more favourable over the next seven days!
