The final full league programme before Christmas provided the usual range of goals and talking points in both divisions.

In the Premier Division, Runcorn Town continued to set the pace at the top of the table with a 4-0 win over Abbey Hey at the Pavilions. Two goals from Kevin Exell bookended others from Joseph Holt and leading scorer Craig Cairns in a game that Town established a three goal lead by half time.

Meanwhile Town’s local rivals Runcorn Linnets are tucked in four points behind in second place, after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Nelson. Ben Hoskin had given the Admirals an early lead that they held until 18 minutes from time, but two goals from Antony Hickey secured the points for Linnets.

Perhaps the surprise result of the day was at the Delta Taxis Stadium where free scoring Bootle drew a rare blank in going down 2-0 to Squires Gate. Ben Seear and Seydou Bamba were on target for Gate to ensure they completed a league double over Joe Doran’s men.

Bootle remain in third place, level on points with Atherton Collieries and 1874 Northwich, who both won their respective games.

Colls cruised to a comfortable 6-2 win at Cammell Laird 1907. Ben Hardcastle and Mark Battersby both scored twice for Colls.

In contrast, there was just a single goal in the game between AFC Liverpool and 1874 Northwich, with Tom Bailey scoring for the visitors.

Padiham recorded their fourth win in a row in beating Congleton Town 2-1 at the YESSSS Electrical Arena, Gary Hunter and Marc Young scoring in the second half after Jordan Cobley had given Congleton the lead at half time.

After a fine midweek County Cup win at Glossop North End, West Didsbury & Chorlton rounded off a fine week with a 2-1 win at Hanley Town.

A Sean Mountford penalty for Hanley had cancelled out an opener from Nicolaos Evangelinos, but Anthony Potts scored the decisive goal for West 20 minutes from time.

There were single goal wins for Maine Road, Matthew Morgan scoring in their victory at home to Barnton, and also for AFC Darwen, with Connor Gaul scoring the only goal of the game at New Mills.

Elsewhere, Barnoldswick Town and Ashton Athletic shared a goalless draw and the game between Winsford United and Irlam was abandoned due to fog.

In the First Division, Whitchurch Alport moved back to the top of the table thanks to a 3-0 win over St Helens Town at Yockings Park, Michael Blundell scoring twice.

Charnock Richard moved up into second place with a good 5-0 win at FC Oswestry Town, with Carl Grimshaw scoring twice to take his tally for the season to 26.

City of Liverpool FC lost ground at the top after going down 2-1 at Sandbach United. Josh Lane’s penalty inside two minutes gave Sandbach the lead, and although Aaron Rey’s 64th minute strike pulled the Purples back level, the parity was restored for only six minutes as Alfred Hammond struck what proved to be the winner on 70 minutes.

Near neighbours Litherland REMYCA kept up their promotion chase with a 3-1 home win over Eccleshall, although it took goals in the last eight minutes from Anthony Cato and Lewis Murphy to seal victory.

An early Andy Miller goal provided a welcome first win in 13 attempts for Atherton LR, who beat Carlisle City 1-0 at Crilly Park, and there was a dramatic finish at Bacup in the game between Bacup Borough and Cheadle Town, where two last gasp goals from Liam Tongue turned a 2-1 reverse into a 3-2 win for the visitors.

Holker Old Boys and Stockport Town shared a 2-2 draw, the game between AFC Blackpool ended goalless, and Ashton Town ’s game at home to Prestwich Heys and Widnes’s game at home to Silsden were abandoned due to fog.
