Table topping classic clash at Yockings Park

The top of the table clash in Division One between Whitchurch Alport and City of Liverpool FC in midweek proved to be a game and occasion worthy of two clubs chasing success.

A crowd of 634 - the second highest in the country this season at Step 6 and a record attendance at Yockings Park - turned up to witness an exciting 90 minutes that was won in dramatic fashion by the Purples two minutes from time, when Kevin McEllin’s penalty clinched all three points for Simon Burton’s men.

A quick browse through social media immediately after the game and in the days following suggests that the game was enjoyed by everyone who witnessed it, and the banter between the two clubs and their supporters struck a nice balance between mutual respect and supporting their own team.

Well done to both clubs and their supporters – if you keep producing more of the same in the coming months, the crowds will be sure to keep rolling in.

Something stirring in Oswestry

Although Whitchurch Alport are carrying the Shropshire flag proudly at the top of Division One, fellow Salopians FC Oswestry Town are starting to find their feet too, in their first ever campaign in our league.

Saturday’s win over Bacup Borough made it three straight wins in a row, and five in the last seven games, and with only six goals conceded in those seven games, it suggests that Town are showing signs of being a tough nut to crack.

Sitting just four points of a play off place, and with the knowledge that the 4G surface at the Venue will ensure they keep playing home games through winter, it could be that two Shropshire clubs will have promotion on their minds at the business end of the season.

Stirring comeback from Linnets

The comeback of the weekend was at the Millbank Linnets Stadium where Runcorn Linnets were 3-1 down at home to Squires Gate, with around 25 minutes of the game left, and ended up winning 4-3.

Over recent seasons, Linnets have had an uncanny knack of scoring late in close games to clinch wins, and Saturday’s performance and victory shows that a two goal deficit need not be unsurmountable for Michael Ellison’s men.

High fives from Daisy again

On these pages last week, we made mention of the winning and goalscoring form that Daisy Hill are showing at the moment, but no apologies for doing so again.

A few hours after the comment hit the website pages, Daisy hosted Silsden at New Sirs on Monday night – and ran out 5-4 winners in an amazing game, with Ashley Stott scoring four of the goals including the winner.

It’s getting to the point where it’s barely worth mentioning the possibility of goals when Daisy are involved, just a case of turning up and being entertained, and long may it continue.

Saints goals marching in

All of a sudden St Helens Town have found their mojo, with Saturday’s win at Eccleshall their fifth win in six games, the only reverse in that run coming at Litherland REMYCA in the Liverpool Senior Cup in midweek.

What’s more, goals have been raining in at the same time, with Saints hitting the back of the net 21 times in those six games.

They may be a bit of distance to make up if Saints are going to challenge for a play off spot, but if they keep hitting the back of the net with such monotonous regularity, don’t rule it out.
