Two goals in extra time secured victory for Staveley Miners Welfare and a place in the next round of the FA Vase, after a cracking cup tie at Mossie Park.

After missing a first half penalty and going behind early in the second half, two goals from Carl Grimshaw put Charnock Richard ahead with less than 20 minutes remaining, but clinical finishing from the Northern Counties East League side proved to be decisive.

It was a result that had looked unlikely for much of a game that was played at a frantic pace, with Charnock Richard dominating possession for long spells and presenting plenty of attacking threat.

Charnock Richard started the game well, forcing the pace from the first blast of the referee’s whistle, and created two good chances inside the opening twelve minutes.

In the third minute, Staveley’s Luke Rafferty misjudgement of the bounce of the ball allowed Oliver Evans to collect and advance in on goal, and his shot across the face just missed the far post.

Then, Daniel Smith played a ball into the feet of Mark Adams, whose shot on the turn was tipped over by Staveley keeper Lewis Naylor.

A storming run and cross from full back Damian Dashti, followed by a shot from Liam Hayton that was pushed around the post by the keeper, kept up the pressure on the Staveley defence but despite dominating possession Charnock Richard couldn’t break down a well organised visiting defence.

But a gilt-edged opportunity arose two minutes before half time, when Oliver Evans was brought down by Staveley keeper Naylor, and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

However, once the Staveley protests had been waved away, Ross O’Farrell blasted the resulting penalty over the bar, and the first half ended goalless.

It was a miss that was made all the more painful when Staveley took the lead five minutes into the second half, with a goal out of nothing from full back Liam Nelthorpe.

Picking the ball up on halfway, the Staveley defender strode forward and unleashed a shot from all of 35 yards that squirmed under the diving Gavin Bates and into the net.

But Charnock were back on level terms within two minutes, when Carl Grimshaw’s near post header from Nathan Fairhurst’s corner kick ended up in the back of the net off the underside of the crossbar.

The same combination delivered Charnock Richard’s second goal midway through the second half, this time a free kick from Fairhurst once again finding Grimshaw at the near post and his header into the roof of the net put the home side ahead for the first time.

However, it was a lead that lasted only five minutes, as Staveley drew level with a well worked goal.

A fine sweeping cross field ball found Shaun Nesbitt in space on the right wing, and as the defence backed off, he buried a well struck shot from 25 yards past Bates into the bottom corner of the net.

Both sides spurned chances to clinch victory before the 90 minutes were up, most notably five minutes from time when Grimshaw was put through on goal but sent a shot inches past the far post.

But with only two minutes of extra time on the clock, Shaun Nesbitt put Staveley ahead once more, outpacing the home defence before sliding the ball past Bates.

With both sides tiring after a frantic opening 90 minutes, the pace of the game began to slow down, but although Staveley had the luxury of a lead they kept pushing forward and early in the second period of extra time, they were only kept out by two goal line clearances from Charnock Richard defenders in a frantic goalmouth scramble.

However, the visitors finally sealed the win with nine minutes of extra time remaining, when neat build up play by Kurtis Morley found Adam Lee in space inside the box, and he sent a delicate chip shot over Bates into the net to book his side’s place in the next round.
