FA Vase ties and games in both divisions offered a fascinating bill of fare at the weekend, although the Buildbase FA Vase First Round didn't provide much League cheer, with thirteen of our clubs bowing out, and just five progressing into the next round.
Performance of the day on Saturday was at the Kensite Stadium where Atherton Collieries won 5-0 against Jarrow Roofing Boldon Community Association. Mark Battersby and Vinny Bailey both scpored twice, and Justin Pickering rounded off a great display with a cracking fifth goal a minute from time.
An ever bigger margin of victory was recorded by Bootle in the Merseyside derby on Sunday, with the Bucks winning 6-0 at AFC Liverpool. Steve Jones and Carl Peers both scored twice.
A 78th minute goal from Danny Thomas secured a place for 1874 Northwich in the next round of the Vase and a 1-0 win over Billingham Synthonia at the St Lukes Barton Stadium, and second half goals from Kieron Pickup, Aaron Taylor and James Dean earned Padiham a 3-0 win at Guisborough Town.
Extra time was needed to settle the Lancashire derby between Charnock Richard and Barnoldswick Town at Mossie Park which was goalless until the 109th minute, before two goals from Carl Grimshaw and one from Mark Adams saw the home side through to a 3-1 win.
Elsewhere, there were some near misses and hard luck stories, but ultimately, the end result was an exit from the competition.
Probably the most disappointing result was dealt to Runcorn Linnets, who led at half time against South Shields through an own goal, but conceded in the 90th minute to eventually lose 2-1.
A hat trick from visiting striker Chris Spinks sent Congleton Town to a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of Hall Road Rangers, and two goals from North East non-league legend Paul Brayson helped Newcastle Benfield to a 3-1 win over Irlam.
Runcorn Town and Holker Old Boys both suffered the same fate, losing 2-1 at home to Hallam and Stockton Town respectively, while Hanley Town lost 1-0 at Sporting Khalsa.
After a goalless first half, Chadderton eventually lost 3-1 at AFC Emley, and four other clubs suffered home defeats to Northern League opponents: Ashton Town (4-0 against Billingham Town), Atherton LR (3-0 against Chester-le-Street Town), Litherland REMYCA (4-1 against Shildon) and Stockport Town (3-1 against Ryhope CW)
In the Premier Division, no games took place that affected the top of the table, but there were some notable results none the less.
Two goals from Calum Broady helped Maine Road to a 3-2 win at New Mills, and on fire Ashton Athletic bagged their second 6-0 win in succession, with Cammell Laird 1907 the latest victims in a game where Adam Gilchrist scored a hat trick.
Goals in the last 11 minutes from Dale Jennings and Jordan Johnson helped Winsford United to a 3-1 win at Abbey Hey, and AFC Darwen earned a very welcome 2-0 win at home to Barnton to move them four points clear of the relegation zone, thanks to goals from Alex Ralph and Ryan McKenna.
Nelson and Squires Gate shared a goalless draw.
In the First Division, Whitchurch Alport took advantage of Charnock Richard being in FA Vase action by moving to the top of the table with a 3-0 win at Silsden, Simon Everall opening the scoring in the first half and Mike Blundell adding two more after the break.
Second half goals from Daley Woods and Christopher Lester earned City of Liverpool a 2-0 win at home to Alsager Town that keeps them in third place, and Sandbach United moved into fifth place after a 3-0 win at Carlisle City that was only sealed when Daniel Bartle scored twice in the last nine minutes.
Cheadle Town dealt a blow to Prestwich Heys’ promotion hopes with a 2-0 win at Park Road, a Thabiso Magida penalty and a late second from Michael Sherrington bagging the points for Town.
Craig Naylor’s goal was the difference between FC Oswestry Town and Daisy Hill at the Venue, with Daisy bagging the points, and the games between AFC Blackpool and Eccleshall, and Bacup Borough against St Helens Town ended in 1-1 draws.
