A mixture of ties in the Macron Cup First Round and league fixtures in both divisions was the bill of fare on offer for followers of our League at the weekend, and as ever, there was plenty to discuss when the final whistles blew.

In the Macrob Cup, three Division One clubs progressed at the expense of Premier Division opponents, although St Helens Town looked down and out after going two goals down to AFC Darwen after just six minutes of the game at Valerie Park. But two goals apiece from Andrew Gillespie and Stuart McDonald saw the Saints through to a 4-2 win.

Congleton Town and Prestwich Heys were tied at 3-3 after 90 minutes at the Richborough Estates Stadium, but a goal from Josh Barrick five minutes from the end of extra time ensured Heys moved into the next round with a 4-3 win.

The third Division One side to beat Premier opponents were FC Oswestry Town who were tied 1-1 with Irlam at the end of 120 minutes at the Venue, but won 5-4 in the ensuing penalty shoot out.

Elsewhere, Widnes were highest scorers in the round, winning 5-3 at Alsager Town, with Kevin Towey scoring a hat trick that included two penalties, and George Lomax grabbing the other two goals.

Kyle Riley also scored a hat trick, contributing three for Winsford United in the 4-0 home win over Atherton LR, and the most dramatic finale of the day was at Townfield, where Barnton were a goal with two minutes left of the game against Nelson, only for a Zama Yves strike and a Joe Corey Cook penalty in the last minute to snatch a 2-1 win for the visitors.

Two second half goals in the space of five minutes from Daniel Regan and Daniel Smith secured a 2-0 win for Ashton Athletic at Carlisle City, and a 49th minute goal from Ryan Hibbert earned New Mills a 1-0 win at Squires Gate.

Zack Dale scored one of Barnoldswick Town’s goal on his debut that helped Barlick to a 3-1 win at West Didsbury & Chorlton, and Matthew Russell, Tom Bailey with a penalty, and Sam Hind were on target for 1874 Northwich in the 3-2 win at Padiham.

Steve Foster scored twice in Runcorn Linnets’ 4-2 win over Daisy Hill at the Millbank Linnets Stadium, and Daniel Bartle also grabbed a double in Sandbach United’s 4-2 win over Stockport Town

In the Premier Division, Atherton Collieries narrowed the gap between themselves and 1874 Northwich at the top of the table to one point with their 1-0 win over Maine Road at the Kensite Stadium, Liam Wood on target with his first goal for Colls.

Bootle are in third place, two points behind Colls with two games in hand, after a 3-0 win at home to Runcorn Town. The game was goalless until the 63rd minute when Steven Jones opened the scoring, and Ryan Cox and Carl Peers rounded off a good win for the Bucks.

AFC Liverpool moved up into 7th with their 4-1 win over Cammell Laird 1907 on Friday night, George Donnelly scoring twice, and goals in each half from Angelo Errico and Dan Cope delivered a 2-0 win for Hanley Town at Abbey Hey.

In the First Division, City of Liverpool bounced back from the midweek home defeat to Whitchurch Alport with a 2-0 win at Silsden to keep their place at the top of the table. Andrew Fowler and Daniel Dalton were the Purples’ goalscorers.

Whitchurch Alport are second only on goal difference thanks to a 3-0 win over Chadderton at Yockings Park. The game was effectively over by the 20th minute, with a goal from Michael Blundell and two from Simon Everall giving Alport a lead they held until the end.

Daniel Marland scored twice for Charnock Richard in a 5-1 win at Ashton Town that keeps them in third place ahead of Litherland REMYCA on goal difference. Remy slipped to fourth after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to AFC Blackpool, Lewis Murphy scoring both Remy goals.

Cheadle Town took their shooting boots up to Holker Old Boys and travelled home with a 5-2 win in which Reece Web scored twice, and an own goal proved to be the match winner for Bacup Borough in their 2-1 win at Eccleshall.
